Prey Animal
48” x 60” x 2”
Oil paint, sumi ink, xuan paper, calligraphy paper, wood panel

Beautified gore. The awful, raw, exposed-nerve honesty of being out, but also the performed bids for connection that come with it. Nestled among the viscera are precious objects - pearls, coins, gold ingots - desire to be fully known and still valued. Largest text reads “I like boys and girls”; each two-character phrase is a literary reference to Chinese queerness, some references are thousands of years old. Smaller texts: internal desires, a coming out letter to my parents, and lyrics to the infamous “The Moon Represents My Heart” (月亮代表我的心).

What a weekend!! I joined Round 3 of CYPHER, a live art-making event at @shunpikearts’s @artistsofcolorexpo, where artists responded to a shared prompt across multiple rounds and mediums. In Round 3, I and two other artists were presented with sculptures (Round 2), paintings and prints (Round 1) and instructed to create new work on the spot inspired by those pieces.

While examining the work from Rounds 1 & 2, this Chinese idiom kept leaping to mind: 天馬行空。 The literal translation is roughly “heavenly horse crossing the sky” and is similar to the English idiom “when pigs can fly” — it conveys a sense of unrestrained creativity and possibility. It’s what I kept thinking when I looked at the different styles and mediums that were all tied together by the CYPHER. I feel so grateful that I was able to join ACES this year and be part of such a vibrant creative community of artists 🩷

Booked 📚! Atelier student Ning recently got to create a new library card design for SPL (@seattlepubliclibrary). It's so cute! We wouldn't normally commit fraud but we'll need multiples of these... by @ningwan_art

New Library cards just dropped, in collaboration with local artists!

Choose one when you sign up for a Library card, or swap out your old card for a new design (just remember, you'll get a new Library card number, too).

Introducing...
🌀 The Journey Card by Diego Fidelis @blu88art. Where will you go with a Library card?
🦦 The Book Club Card by Ning Wan @ningwan_art. We have a book for everyone: orca, crustacean, and especially you.
