Day - 4 Roots & Revolution 🌿

Day - 2

Day - 1 orientation (@nukkadcafeofficial)

Nirmaan Yatra team reached Sonthi Ashram, the place of penance of Katre Ji and Bapat Ji "

A team of 16 youth from six states, who are doing research work on water, forest and land in the districts of central Chhattisgarh, reached Sonthi Kushtha Ashram a few days ago. The aim of Nirmaan Yatra is to bring the youth together and provide them an opportunity to learn about each other's culture, traditions and values.

On this occasion, the head of the institution, Mr. Sudhir Dev Ji, gave a warm welcome to the youth and informed them about the struggles of Katre Ji and Bapat Ji, how Katre Ji faced many challenges in his life and established the institution through his struggles.

Apart from this, the head of the institution informed them about the work and objectives of the institution, he told how the institution is working for different sections of the society and how the work of the institution is bringing positive changes in the society.

Day 1 of Nirman Yatra: A Transformational Journey Begins

@nirmanyatra
This Friday morning at Nukkad Café felt alive with possibilities. It wasn’t a usual day—it was the first step of Nirman Yatra, a journey of discovery, connection, and change. A handpicked group of vibrant Yatris from Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, and across India came together, ready to explore, learn, and transform.

The day kicked off with an icebreaker activity, and in no time, strangers turned into companions. Laughter echoed, stories were shared, and bonds began forming—bonds that feel like they’ll last far beyond these 10 days. There was a sense of warmth in the air, of beginnings filled with promise.

The morning brought enriching sessions on community governance, self-awareness, righteousness, and approaching challenges with a transformational lens. Each Yatri leaned in, soaking up the wisdom, asking questions, and equipping themselves with the tools to make a difference.

The Sanjha Chulha activity was a delightful highlight of the evening. Cooking together brought out the most creative sides of the group—sharing recipes, experimenting with ingredients, and laughing over stories tied to food. Meals were more than just meals—they were moments of connection, joy, and shared purpose.

The day ended on a high note with Hemlata Ji, an inspiring force of resilience and advocacy. Her story of courage and determination lit up the room, leaving everyone introspecting about their own potential to create impact.

Day 1 was everything we hoped for—rich in experiences, warm in connections, and inspiring in every sense. It set the tone for what’s to come: a journey of learning, unlearning, and growing together.

Here’s to 9 more days of curiosity, reflection, and transformation. Let’s keep building something beautiful, one step at a time.

Listening respectfully & responding empathetically, yet assertively can resolve conflicts, and do it well and quickly. I might have heard this multiple times from many people over the years, but Gangaram Paikra, Chaupal's Director gave a live demo, albeit unknowingly, of how it really happens. All within a 10 minute conversation with 3 aggrieved men seemingly ready to fight, but left calmly and confident that their work will be done. 10 minutes, and I learnt something which might take me a whole lifetime to practice well.

Over years, Chaupal has achieved quite a lot when it comes to implementation of MGNREGA and complicated acts like PESA & FRA (please read about them if you are unaware about them), and has built a deep trust for itself within the community members, perhaps also because of its own calm yet strong way of doing things.

Chaupal was one organisation, or a movement in itself that when we were asked by the facilitators of Nirman Yatra to critically analyse, I only had one thing to say - "Gangaram Paikra knows what they do well, and what they can do better already. There are no gaps that I can identify that the Chaupal team is already not aware of and have plans of working on them in order of priority. Instead, I believe that the willingness to identify its own blind spots and do so honestly is its biggest strength".

"Khel ke beena toh zindagi nhi hai" - Itwari Raj. This was the reason that along with his constable job, Itwari Raj decided to reconnect the Shivtarai with its abandoned tradition of using bow & arrow by teaching archery to the young people in his village. And he has been doing it since 2004, and oh so well with hundreds of medals to his students' name while dealing with every challenge that gets in his way.

Itwari Raj gave us his time and opened up about parts of his story that told me particularly how different (and difficult) it is to work for your passion while creating an impact in a tribal area than it is in a city. But it also made me see, process and appreciate how passion when mixed with dedication and commitment can truly start creating ripples ultimately leading to a whole wave of change.

Itwari Raj is building something that will be a legacy to many of Shivtarai's young people and an example for all those who want to do anything that poses challenges at every turn.

I am taking many learnings from him, but it's the questions that will stay alive in me until I find the answers, specifically, "What is this GAME of PRIVILEGE that all of us play and what can I (& we) do to make it more equitable?"

I will hopefully be able to find some answers to this complex question. In the meantime, I can only request those of you who read this far to see if you will want to contribute to Itwari Raj's and hundreds of Shivtarai's students' journey in any way.

Let's do our bit to #ChangeTheGame.
