Project FLEX VCU culminated its third year of impact with its annual Power of Play Day at Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility on Saturday, May 2nd. The program’s mission is to harness the power of sport for incarcerated youth at Bon Air. Power of Play Day was filled with activities like soccer, lacrosse, football, dizzy bat, tug of war, and relay races to celebrate the collective power of sport and community. Project FLEX VCU is a sport-centered leadership program for justice-involved youth collaboratively run through a partnership between VCU’s Center for Sport Leadership and Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice’s Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility. The program delivers sport-for-development programming on-site twice weekly by DJJ recreation staff, CSL faculty, graduate assistants, and undergraduate students. Formally called the Youth Justice Sports Partnership, Project FLEX VCU is now affiliated with Project FLEX at Northern Illinois University, the largest sport-based university-community partnership in the country. VCU’s program is led by CSL faculty member Dr. Kalyn McDonough-Smith. #CSLnetwork

Officially a Master! Two years of incredible experiences and the most challenges I’ve ever faced have led to this moment, where I can celebrate my accomplishments and begin a brighter future. I could not be more grateful for the wonderful people in my life who love and support me through each and every step. Thank you, NIU, for preparing me to be the best percussionist and educator I can be! I am eager to find new experiences and opportunities in the greater Chicago area to share my love of music with others.

One year of CrossKourt Pickleball. What started as a fun team tournament across facilities with @idsinsta turned into something so much more. A place where people show up, compete, support one another, and give back when we can. Thank you to the players, venues, sponsors, and partners who made year one possible. There are truly so many of you I talk with regularly about all things CK — you know who you are — and I hope you know how much I appreciate you. None of this would be possible without your feedback, support, and guidance. As we head into year two, the three reasons I started CK will stay grounded in everything we do. If you’ve played in a CK event, drop a 🏓 below — and stick around, year two is just getting started. Thank you all for coming along on this journey. It means a lot. #CrossKourtPickleball #PickleballCommunity #YearOne #MoreThanPickleball #PickleballLife

Have to give a huge shout out to Lloyd and Frank, two amazing guys I’ve met through @niuprojectflex This program doesn’t happen without so many amazing and dedicated people and I’m grateful to have met both of them. They work day in and day out with the kids and play a huge role in all the programming especially pickleball. They each grew to love the game and just partnered in their first tournament together hosted by the @windycitybulls! They went 9-0 in pool play and advance to the semis and championship matches to be held next week at the NOW Arena! Great job guys and thank you for all that you do for the kids and providing them opportunities to play each week! Go get em next week 💪

6 months ago I had the opportunity to volunteer with @niuprojectflex and I’m so glad I did. Myself and the other volunteers have been working with these young men on life skills and healthy fitness behaviors for their life after prison. Yesterday they had the opportunity to participate in their first ever pickleball tournament. So proud of them for leaving it all on the court. Excited to share other updates soon and hopefully more tourneys in the future. If you’d like to learn more reach out to myself or @drjsportsocpsychniu
