Coaching staff had a team play in the @nlbplayers @hittraxofficial SR league. Was a fun time and there are already talks of bringing it back next year…

Winter catching camp @nlbplayers run by @612catching doing some short throws into extended throws.

Why we do short throws - it allows the athletes to have a long throw where they can get the ball to the target in the air. Players can focus on their footwork and transfer without worrying about getting the ball to the target. Think of it as the “front toss” of catching.

Why we do extended throws - it exposes a players flaws in technique even more than the normal distance would. If catchers rely too much on arm strength and not enough on good technique they’ll often step out with their front left foot and airmail the ball up and to the right. If they don’t get on top in their throw the ball will tail making a more difficult catch/tag for their teammate.

Easy 2-0 today against the has beens, they forgot to rig the hittrax so it was smooth sailing from the start. MVP was @noahhammernik from the has beens for grounding into double plays to end both games.

“Side hops into a receive drill”

Side hops into your stance are one of our favorites @612catching We do this specific drill for a few reasons…

1. It forces them to move. Catchers are athletes and need to train in athletic movements.

2. It causes some level of duress. When a ball is about to be fired at you and you’re not facing the machine catchers (especially younger ones) tend to panic and their technique suffers.

3. It mixes it up. We have been indoors at @nlbplayers for months training and different types of receiving drills help keep things fresh and keep a players focus.

Comment below if you do any side hop catcher drills

🗣️ 612 Catching behind the scenes:

Here we’re on having our catchers FEEL what the body should be doing with 1KD blocks.

We like to use no gear and tennis balls as we lay the foundation, so no bad habits are created.

Receiving drills ⬇️⬇️⬇️

1. “Around the World”: A great warmup we use flipping balls around the zone. Starting middle, then glove side, high, low, arm side.

2. One hop receive: Working low to high receiving in the lowest part of the zone.

3. “Slam Drill”: High pitch in the zone working on bringing it down to the tee or “slamming” it back into the zone.

4. “Extend around the tee”: A great drill for young catchers, especially inside pitches extending in front or past the tee.

Here are some blocking drills we like to rotate through in our offseason training:

1) Dry blocks into recovery. Place 4 balls around home plate. Player has to get to the right side of where coach points, making sure feet/shoulders always align with 2B

2) Block or receive drill off pitching machine

3) No gear blocks with tennis balls to introduce one knee down blocks. Great for players to understand what to do with their body angle.

4) RHP spiked curveball blocks off the machine. Catcher has to create a slight angle. We use @ownhomeorgohome x-balls for extra difficulty.
