Female sexual dysfunction is often a blood flow issue.

Arousal needs blood flow. And the clitoral artery is tiny. About half the size of the penile artery. A quarter the size of a coronary artery.

Small arteries show problems first. So when blood flow drops, women often feel it here before anywhere else.

This is not just aging. It’s anatomy.

The good news is there’s a lot we can do:
→ A real assessment, not “this is just perimenopause”
→ Hormone therapy, including vaginal estrogen to wake up the tissue
→ Pelvic floor therapy
→ Supporting your heart and circulation, because it’s all connected

Nitric oxide is a big one. It helps your blood vessels open up. The brands I trust are Calroy (Vascanox), Humann Neo40, and Berkeley Life.

Your sexual health is part of your whole health. Don’t suffer through it.

Thank you to @dr.amybkillen for this great visual and 👀opener!

When men have sexual dysfunction, it’s treated as an early warning sign for heart disease.

When women have low libido, pain with intimacy, or trouble with arousal, it’s usually written off as aging.

Your sexual health is a health marker.

I look for the cause and treat it. That can include a cardiovascular workup, hormone therapy, a vaginal health evaluation, pelvic floor therapy, support for blood flow and nitric oxide, and a look at your sleep and blood sugar.

An open letter to menopause… 💌

Happy World Menopause Day.

Menopause can be messy, exhausting and, honestly, a lot.

Every woman’s experience is different, and every symptom deserves to be taken seriously.

But midlife can also bring something unexpected: freedom.

Less people-pleasing. More saying no. More taking up space.

👇 Finish the letter in the comments:

“Dear Menopause…”

💌 Send this to a friend who gets it.

For this week’s Midlife Edit ✍️ , we went back to the archives. This piece by Julia Musto in The Independent was published back in March, but the lives it describes will feel familiar to so many women today.

A parent who needs more help. Children who still need you. A job to keep showing up for. And somewhere in between, your own life, health and needs.

Tara Hastings’ story of caring for her father while working full time and raising three kids puts words to what often goes unseen. The appointments. The worry. The decisions. The exhaustion you don’t always admit because you love the people you’re caring for.

You can love them deeply and still need a break. You can be the person everyone relies on and need someone to show up for you.

That’s why this story resonated with us. Caregivers deserve support long before they reach a breaking point. And these conversations deserve space long after an article leaves the headlines.

What’s one thing you wish people understood about what you’re carrying right now? Tell us below. 💬

Send this to someone who needs to feel seen, or someone you want to start the conversation with. You don’t have to wait for a crisis to talk about care. ❤️

Apparently, figuring out what we want next is something we’re meant to squeeze in between everyone else’s appointments.

We’re watching our parents get older. Learning when to let our kids go and when to pick up the phone. Checking in on friends facing hard news. Trying to do our jobs, get some sleep and understand our own changing bodies.

And somewhere in there, we have questions about our own lives.

You can love your people and need a break from being needed. You can be good at handling things and wish someone else would take a turn.

If it feels like everything is happening at once, you’re not alone. A lot of us are right there with you.

What are you juggling at the moment? You don’t have to wrap it up with “but I’m fine.” 💛

We’ve said yes with a knot in our stomach. Yes when we were exhausted. Yes because disappointing ourselves somehow felt easier than disappointing someone else.

By midlife, we know what those yeses cost.

So we’re taking a minute before answering. Checking whether we actually want to. Letting someone be disappointed without rushing to fix it.

And saving a few yeses for the things we keep putting off for ourselves.

What are you no longer giving an automatic yes to? ❤️

If you’re still cycling, your hormones change all month. Estrogen rises first. You ovulate. Then progesterone should rise.

So the day you test changes the number you get.

I like to test about a week before your period. That’s your luteal phase, when progesterone should be at its highest. It’s also where I see the most imbalances. Low progesterone. Estrogen running high compared to progesterone. That’s often where PMS, poor sleep, anxiety and heavy periods show up.

It’s also important to look beyond just sex hormones to get a comprehensive look. Comment LABS and I’ll send you my list.

“Just get on with it.”

How many of us learned that response before we ever learned what to expect from menopause?

Keep working. Keep caring for everyone. Say you’re fine.

We’re done with that expectation.

You deserve to be heard, to have your questions taken seriously and to get support. You’re allowed to say, “Actually, I’m struggling,” without apologizing for making anyone uncomfortable.

At The Midlife Collective, we’re making room for the conversations women were taught to keep to themselves. The messy ones. The personal ones. The ones that make another woman say, “Thank God. Me too.”

❤️ What’s one thing you wish someone had told you about perimenopause or menopause? Tell us below. Your words might be exactly what another woman needs today.

Midlife has a way of showing you who your people are.

The women who sit beside you through the endings, the beginnings and the chapters you never saw coming. The ones who listen without trying to fix you, tell you the truth with love and remind you who you are when you’ve forgotten.

Some friendships help us survive a chapter. The right ones make space for the women we’re still becoming.

Tag your ride-or-dies below. The women who have held you up, cheered you on and helped you find your way back to yourself. 💗

“Your cholesterol is fine.”

Here are four numbers that weren’t on the panel that told you so.

ApoB. LDL tells you how much cholesterol is being carried. ApoB counts the particles doing the carrying. Every one of them can get into your artery wall. Two women can have the same LDL and very different counts.

Lp(a). Mostly genetic, and not on a standard panel. Particle for particle, it’s more damaging than LDL. Estrogen helps keep it down, so it often rises after menopause. Tested once in your 30s? Check it again.

Triglyceride to HDL ratio. You already have both numbers. Divide one by the other. It’s one of the simplest windows into insulin resistance.

hs-CRP. Not regular CRP. It measures inflammation. Your cholesterol can look fine while inflammation is high.

None of this is exotic. It’s just not on the standard order.

Comment PANEL and I’ll send you the list to bring to your provider. 💛
