< Some Memories Choose to Stay, Others Choose to Flee > This installation traces how memory travels across generations, and how silence can shape identity as deeply as words. It began with the diaries of my grandfather, my mother, and myself, three voices bound by blood yet separated by war, time, and social change in Taiwan. My grandfather’s migration as a soldier during the Chinese Civil War left unspoken wounds; my mother’s diaries reveal the quiet resilience of a woman navigating Taiwan’s industrial boom; my own notes echo a restless generation in search of new ground. The work itself is my diary, written in response to my family’s diaries and translated into a spatial experience. It becomes a constellation of memory where handwriting fades, a voice continuously questions and answers itself, and light seems to breathe and flow. Rather than following a linear history, the audience drifts through layers of presence and absence, sensing how intimate memories reverberate within collective forgetting. Born under the theme Third Nature: feminine spatial practices, I see my family as my Third Nature, a shifting landscape of migration, diaries, bodies, and love. It cannot be named, yet it lingers in what is written, and in what is left unsaid. 

NAME: Ning Ju Hsu BASED IN: Netherland and Taiwan She is a multidisciplinary artist and designer from Taiwan, and a frequent dreamer since childhood. Working primarily with installations, visuals, and spatial practices, She discovers romantic narratives where the rational world least expects them, transforming illusions into tangible manifestations, ordinary spaces into universes, and questions into beautiful, continuous totems. ICON Project “A Shape of Uncertainty” Inspired by crop circles—patterns of mysterious beauty, left in fields like whispers from an unknown hand—the phenomenon dates back to 1678, entwined with myths of The Mowing Devil. Since then, these formations have become a canvas for wonder, a cipher waiting to be unraveled. Scientists traced their spirals, mapping the Golden Ratio, Fibonacci Sequence, and sacred geometry—patterns found in galaxies, ancient cathedrals, and blooming flowers. Some claimed they held hidden knowledge—new elements, growth techniques, or even messages from a civilization beyond our own. This gray space between scientific evidence and pure imagination is what makes them so captivating. Between 1978 and 1991, two artists quietly stepped into the fields and wove their own circles, creating over 200 formations that puzzled the world. Researchers extracted meaning, only to later discover the deception. But by then, belief had already taken root, refusing to wither. With time, crop circles drifted from mystery into the digital age—chopped into one-minute decoding videos, repurposed as prophecies, aesthetics, advertisements. No longer unsolved riddles, they became symbols detached from their origin. This reflects something deeper—the fragmentation, emotionalization, and performativity of knowledge today. The moment a pattern emerges, we rush to explain, to categorize, to give it a name. I designed my icon as a movement, like a clock—constantly shifting. Scientists see formulas. Mystics see cosmic messages. Psychologists see reflections of the mind. Storytellers weave them into fate. Yet, a crop circle is just a shape—until we start to interpret it. This made me wonder Does meaning come from uncovering, or from interpretation itself? I chose one of the most debated shapes in crop circle history, asking people how they imagined it. From their words, I created ten fictional narratives, experimenting how meaning is shaped through storytelling, symbolism, and perception. A symbol can be both nothing and everything—depending on how we choose to see it.
