“You can’t architect a compelling experience backward from financial outcomes.” Neal Stephenson cuts through the startup playbook nonsense

The right order: creative idea with genuine value → people get recognized and paid → financial outcomes might follow. Wrong order: financial mechanism → try to attract creators → nothing compelling happens.

Rebecca witnessed this during Web3's early years at Venice Film Festival. Immersive artists and game developers didn’t care about blockchain. They cared about creative freedom. Tech kept leading the pitch. Creators kept walking away.

The lesson: compensation models don’t create compelling experiences. Creative ideas create compelling experiences. Compensation just ensures creators can keep making them. Start with art. The platform follows.

"Screw it. We’ll build our own.” That’s the Impressionist energy Rebecca Barkin brings to the creator economy revolution.

New episode with @lamina1official
When Monet and Degas got rejected by Paris’s classical establishment, they started underground galleries.

They became the greatest art movement of their generation. Neal Stephenson and Lamina1 are watching the same pattern repeat: creators exhausted by Big Tech platforms taking 70% and dictating terms.

So they’re building decentralized infrastructure where artists own their IP, set their own royalties, and earn equity in the platforms themselves. It’s not new. It’s just finally possible with blockchain.

The greatest creator movements happen when power consolidates too tightly.

In reflecting back on our SALA Summit: New York City, we are struck by three things: the remarkable kindness and thoughtfulness of our community; sincere and meaningful engagement around some of today's most critically important issues; and a shared commitment to driving positive change during these highly divisive times.

Thank you to our host partner Intel Corporation and support partners: Ariel Investments and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Please join us on our journey and enjoy these highlights!

#labiennalecinema2023 it has been fabulous and I’ll be staying longer next year. Seeing Attenborough’s Conquest if the Skies in the selection outside of competition for immersive is another proud moment for the team @atlantic.productions and our partners @metaquest @jgleit @echeng
The #production-bridge offering creators partnerships and finance advise is invaluable, and the #labiennaleimmersive island again having a fabulous selection curated by the brilliant @lizzierosenthal and @michelreilhac.
The networking via #MadWomenXR event hosted with @bulkandswagger @no_barkin @lizzierosenthal and me is a highlight.
Meeting people face to face in the glorious Excelsior with the best vodka martini is a lovely way to build working friendships and collaborations. It is times like these when I love my job.
