We can’t even believe this last week.

In Mexico, in the early mornings of summer, my grandparents would always put on black and white movies of the golden age of Mexican cinema. Sometimes we’d eat breakfast. Sometimes we’d fall back asleep. However the day went about, it almost always started like this: a movie, the smell of coffee, and my grandparents starting the day. I was little, but I still remember. It will stay with me forever.

And this week we got to celebrate work that honored that part of me in a neighborhood that we love. In our Queens. Surrounded by other artists and filmmakers and friends that we adore and admire.

AND THEN, on top of that, we got to go to Mexodus AND there was a No Book Ban Talk Back afterwards discussing the importance of books and history (which, you know I love books). AND, this is even more important because we were supposed to go the week before, but I couldn’t go. Kismet 👨🏻‍🍳🤌🏽

That night, I watched a man stand on stage at the Daryl Roth Theater in the middle of Union Square and yell, “¡Viva Mexico!”

Our hearts are so full and we truly cannot believe how lucky we are to get to do what we do, in all the different places we get to do it, and to have so many people and places to call home ❤️

Handmade Interventions is on view through May 9 at All Street Gallery (77 East Third Street).

At a moment when images can be generated, replicated, and circulated at unprecedented speed, Handmade Interventions turns attention to works that insist on the presence of the maker. The exhibition does not frame handwork as nostalgic or anti-technological; instead, it proposes that visible labor functions as a conceptual strategy.
