For their thesis project "Endless Column", senior Noah Caspar utilized this year of working from home to connect with the history of their hometown.

"Endless Column is a fibers installation aimed to contain colonial space through the act of culture capture, a term defined by the indigenous-led public secret society New Red Order. This decolonial monument is installed at the former location of Horace Greeley’s House in the Woods. Greeley is a prominent historical figure in Chappaqua, NY whose land acquisition and postmortem property donations catalyzed colonial development in my suburban hometown. Nowadays, a path used for trail running and self-guided walking tours with informational plaques marks the site. Building off of Rosalind Krauss’ 1979 essay “Sculpture in the Expanded Field,” Endless Column recontextualizes columns within the statuary tradition to expand the plinth as a bodily abstraction. The basket’s hollow nature encourages a reevaluation of the interior space it defines, reconstructing sites of memory through expanded discussion and critique."

The Stamps Senior Show is now on view, online! Head to our bio for the link, and join for the opening reception this Friday, April 30.

@the_fulcrum_project has been such an incredible part of the journey. Learning some hard lessons, trying to find balance and self care while pushing forward. Blessed to have people like @feather_chiaverini and @vivianalanghoff around to share it with 🌙.

FEATURED ARTIST - Noah Caspar (they/them)

“Caspar’s work explores identity as it relates to the body, ritual, furniture, and relational aesthetics. Weaving has introduced a new visual vocabulary to explore creation through connection. Recent work focuses on objects whose creation and form facilitate interaction with the body and serve as sites of communalization and ritual. By interacting with these objects, Caspar presents new ways of experiencing that align with their relationship to material, as well as their relationship to their own and other bodies.”

See more of Noah’s work in our Community/Change section of our gallery.

Noah’s Bio:
“Noah Caspar is an artist from Westchester, NY who is currently pursuing their BFA from The University of Michigan - Ann Arbor Stamps School of Art and Design. Their practice exists at the intersection of fine arts, craft, and design. Weaving has introduced a new visual vocabulary to explore creation through connection. Recent work of theirs focuses on objects whose laborious construction and form facilitate interaction with the body and serve as sites of communalization and ritual. They have worked for the outreach and design team for WCBN, the university radio station, and Maize Collective, a student organization which works to create space that fosters connection through music and visual art. Their work has been exhibited in several group shows, including at Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti (2020), Lazy Susan Gallery, New York (2019), Open Floor, Ann Arbor (2019), and Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah (2017). They are also currently participating in a virtual group show hosted by Static Arts Collective (2020) and was recently interviewed for Arts at Michigan (2020). Their work has been published in A3 (2020), Helicon (2020), Trash Mag (2019), and Advo (2016). They are currently a resident of the Fulcrum Project, a crafts based residency for emerging artists in Michigan.”
