August Dump:

I’ve been thinking alot about the concept of grieving friendships. I think it’s a relatively underexplored topic, despite the fact that it’s a universal, ubiquitous experience.

The different kinds of grieving there are:

1- Grieving the genuine loss of a friendship.

2- Grieving the loss of closeness with a friend that you thought would be more enduring, but was more temporary in nature.

3- Grieving the loss of the person that existed relationally to this friend- the version of you who you liked being when you are/were with them.

4- Grieving the loss/transformation or disintegration of friendship groups/structures.

5- Grieving the narrative of the friendship that you constructed and what it meant for your identity.

6- Grieving the rituals that gave breath to the friendship(s) as much as it did your life.

If you want to be in a relationship with anyone ever, this is inevitable. It is the cost of being a relationally rich human. It doesn’t necessarily mean that something went wrong- which is a type of thinking that can strain the grieving process.

The gymrat/muscle-head fitness coach in me wants to think that the grieving could be a skill…it being a skill implies that it is an experience/sensation that could be less uncomfortable, maybe more easy. But probably not. Maybe more so just less unfamiliar and more capacity to sit with the loss and to metabolize it gracefully.

Another noteworthy relevant skill is friendship building- an equal, but different skill that requires another kind of vulnerability.

“You have indeed felt a great loss, but love is a form of energy and it swirls all around us. The Air Nomads' love for you has not left this world, it is still inside of your heart, and is reborn as new love.” - Guru Pathik

Perhaps the skill entails receiving and accepting new forms of love in new friendships.

Because “what is grief, if not love persevering?” -Vision
