From the dissonant ambient/noise albums of Prurient, Pharmakon, Laurel Halo, and Tim Hecker to Pink Floyd’s cinematically charged psychedelic prog records, GUESS WHO’s musical influences stretch far and wide. With the majority of compositions being handled without seeing a single frame of the film, Adam ventured into foreign territory to create a score that we consider to be the fifth character of our short film. Here, Adam discusses how Warp Records infamous electronic duo Boards of Canada impacted his production style, from drone tracking to their use of accenting specific notes.

This video features Boards of Canada “Ready Let’s Go” to highlight these sentiments. Stream Adam’s original score on all platforms. GUESS WHO is out now on YouTube.

Certain movies linger inside of your DNA, change you, inspire you. Maybe you saw them at an impressionable time in your youth or they just had a profound impact on you, but for whatever reason: you simply can’t get away from them. One of the first movies Adam and I bonded over was A Clockwork Orange, after having seen the soundtrack LP in his record collection, followed by 2001 A Space Odyssey. Both scores were touchstones in our understanding of how music, and by extension, track placement (arranged by Gerry Cisneros), could elevate the claustrophobic atmosphere of GUESS WHO.

Here, Adam speaks on how pivotal a score is in getting the audience to believe in the reality depicted on screen, and the impact those influential soundtracks have had on him.

This video features “CASING THE HOUSE,” which you can stream now, along with the rest of the original soundtrack, on all platforms. GUESS WHO is out now on YouTube.

$For this project, we really wanted to put the viewer on their back foot and obfuscate the internal and external fracturing realities at play here. The soundscape played a major role in conveying that confusion and amplifying the disquieting atmosphere, due in large part to Adam Schaffer’s haunting score, not to mention his contributions to sound design and sound effects. Here’s a sneak peek at how dialogue augmentation was utilized in the process. This video features “GLIMMER MELT,” which you can stream now, along with the rest of the soundtrack, on all platforms.
