Nice to discover one of our earlier publications (while traveling by train to Altenburg) on this page dedicated to photobooks that resemble passports in the September edition of the PHOTONEWS: Norman Behrendt’s “Greetings from Turkey”! We still have a few last copies left at the office for our online shop. @normanbehrendt @photonewshamburg #hartmannbooks #passports #turkey @markus.schaden

Even though history is happening in this very moment, habit persuades us to understand historic being as a story about time gone by. It’s as if we were strangers to our own fate, outsiders with no hope of discovering why we are always out of sync with ourselves. We thoughtlessly consider time as “ours” but it resists. When we grasp at it, we only catch hold of its absence, emptiness, splinters of discrete moments, instead of duration.

Vlada Ralko, fragment of essay “The Lasting Horizon between Lightning and Thunder”, 2025

WHO OWNS THE SKY?
>>>Friday, January 16<<<
Salon am Moritzplatz @salonammoritzplatz
Oranienstraße 58, 10969 Berlin–Kreuzberg

Join us for the public program of the exhibition SCARLET HORIZON — an evening of discussion, reflection, and shared perspectives on space, power, and imagination.

:: 18:00 Intro and wine
:: 18:30 Performative lecture “Lands of the Dying Stars” by Morgane Billuart @billuartmc
:: 19:00 Discussion “Who Owns the Sky?” with Norman Behrendt @normanbehrendt , Ossian Fraser @ossianfraser , Sofiia Holubeva @sofiia_holubeva , Fabian Knecht @studiofabianknecht , Tetiana Malinovska @tetiana.malinovskaa , Masha Pryven @masha.pryven and Daria Prydybailo @dariaprydybailo

The program features the performative lecture Lands of the Dying Stars by Morgane Billuart, which explores the new constellations inhabiting the sky today. From SpaceX and Starlink to engineered satellite formations and drones falling lifeless across fields of war, a new technological ecology of alignment and illumination emerges. In an era some describe as the Dark Enlightenment, cosmologies appear and disappear across the sky, activating astrologers and astronomers alike. What was once distant and unreachable is now densely populated by technological beings—flying, harvesting, surveilling, and at times collapsing
back to Earth.

A subsequent discussion Who Owns the Sky? with Berlin-based artists participating in the exhibition, moderated by the curator, examines how the sky has shifted from a symbolic commons into a contested infrastructural territory shaped by satellites, drones, missile defense systems, and AI technologies. The conversation reflects on how these transformations reshape time, perception, and imagination—and where it is still possible to search for air to breathe freely in a world undergoing compression by conflict, control, and restriction, where peace can no longer be taken for granted.

The public program Who Owns the Sky? within the framework of the current exhibition SCARLET HORIZON, which launched a series of conversations that begin in Berlin and will continue in Kyiv and other cities in 2026.

The exhibition is exploring the sky as a fragile shared space that, in times of escalating conflict, has become a
domain of political, technological, and military contestation.
Rooted in the ongoing war in Ukraine and the shifting architectures of global security, Scarlet
Horizon traces the fault lines of a world in upheaval. Once a symbol of transcendence,
permanence, and orientation, the sky in the twenty-first century has lost its metaphysical
stability: it has become a militarized domain, shaped by surveillance, drone maneuvers,
laser tracers, intercepted rockets, and the lingering glow of night-time airstrikes.

The exhibition links Kyiv and Berlin, two cities with a long history of artistic exchange. Their practices open spaces for perception, resistance, and connection, showing how art can cultivate new forms of community in times of growing
uncertainty.
