Since we opened the restaurant, weekends in our house were a little bit odd. During the summer, Marissa was usually incredibly busy with the restaurant, and Gavyn would often be working there, too. But during the rest of the year, weekends—at least during the daytime—usually meant some kind of father-son time.

I would typically get up early and head out for some challenging bike ride, getting home sometime in the late morning, very hungry. On my way home, I would often text Gavyn: “Hey, want to go to Greenport for lunch?” MRBC was generally off-limits on weekends. He would usually respond in one of two ways: “bet!” or a simple thumbs-up.

Marissa was often jealous of our weekend days, and Gavyn and I would laugh about it. Because, yes, we had some great lunches and times together, but the reality was that we weren’t necessarily spending every minute together. Gavyn might have spent the morning doing schoolwork or going for a run while I was out riding. After lunch, he would do schoolwork or watch a movie while I caught up on an hour or two of work. Eventually, Marissa would get home, and we would all do something together as a family that evening.

But there was always this little secret between Gavyn and me: We rarely volunteered the fact that we had gone out. Sometimes we would send Marissa a picture from wherever we were, but mostly, we would just keep it to ourselves. She would usually find out eventually, sometimes days or even weeks later.

I was conscious that we were going out a good amount, but Gavyn never acted spoiled or expected anything. He was simply happy to be there, be with me catching up on movies or comics or whatever was going on with him - he was usually (I don’t want to say always but it kind of feels like always) very present during our weekend outings. I noticed it then, but I appreciate it even more now.

We don’t even know where to begin except with THANK YOU. 💙⚓️ After a postponed date, a Nor’easter, weather pivots, venue changes and about a million moving pieces, WE DID IT

Now that the sun has set on yet another amazing summer, I’m looking back at my top dining destinations and favorite dishes of the season….Long Island has so much to offer especially in summertime from fresh seafood to sunripened produce and usually, an incredible view to go along with them. Come take a stroll down memory lane as I revisit my top 11, yeah couldn’t narrow it down even 1 more!

📍Robkes @robkesnorthport, Northport: one of my favorite places for weekend lunch, the special is $15.95! And it doesn’t get better than their Linguine Chop Chop, with of course, an espresso martini

📍The Clam Bar at Bridge Marina, @the.clam.bar.bayville Bayville: outdoor dining waterside, something I wait all year to open up! So many yummy dishes but this Surf & Turf lobster tail and filet mignon combo really hit the spot

📍Parea, @pareaofhuntington Huntington: omg. OMG. Soft Shell Crabs are one of my favorite things to eat and when you serve it up with the best tzatziki made? Forget about it, you can’t beat it

📍Too Happy Charters, @toohappycharters sailing out of Huntington: Scott and Shari make a night out on the water one to remember every summer between the sunsets and the service. Anything Shari makes is incredible and I let her surprise me everytime….its always a delicious and pleasant surprise!

📍Aunt Jake’s, @auntjakesrestaurant Huntington: new to town, this place is incredible. Yes I’m highlighting an appetizer, the roasted rainbow carrots over dill yogurt. This dish is can’t miss, I got it as a side and wanted more. You need it!

📍Jeff’s Gourmet Market, @jeffs_gourmetmarket Huntington: Seafood is just the beginning! They have a deli, sushi bar, juice bar, olive oil and balsamic vinegar bar and my favorite counter, the butcher. These steak and veggie kebabs lived on our grill all summer, so easy and so yummy!

📍Little Creek Oysters, @northforkoysters Greenport: don’t go looking for them at the docks anymore, they’ve relocated to a nicer spot (a bit off the beaten path to keep those who don’t know our?? Maybe. If that’s why I’m not mad 🤫) Waaay nicer digs with the same incredibly fresh seafood. I’ll take 10 of whatever the oyster or clams of the day are, a
