Have you seen our StoryMap “A Birds Eye View. Drones: A New Lens for Science, A New Tool for Herding” by @northof66 @jtkerby and @northern_ink

Pleased to announce that we have just added some exciting new footage to one of our chapters, that which looks into how drones have not only transformed science, but also reindeer herding. Thanks to @raggodrone for their superb footage, time and participation. Raggo Drone is a company that was established by two reindeer herders in the Rákkonjárga herding district in Varanger, in Eastern Finnmark, Norway.

“For centuries, herders followed their reindeer. Now, their animals follow them”

New #storymap !! Link in bio ➡️

The holiday season in many countries means a large family dinner, and in the ‘anglosphere’ this often means eating a large turkey. In Finnish Lapland, it would be far more common for folks to sit around a large piece of reindeer (Santa’s reindeer notwithstanding).

But perhaps it is rarely wondered: what do reindeer eat at this time of year?

Well, the answer for an increasing number of reindeer is concentrated and dried pellets. With some notable exceptions, all reindeer herders in Finland feed their reindeer during the winter months. For some it is a short term response to poor winter conditions. For others, feeding reindeer has been the norm for decades, as reindeer’s wintry pantry has been removed.

There is a lot to unpack here, and while the feeding of reindeer was not a focus of the CHARTER project, it came up in conversations with reindeer herders frequently,.

@irina.v.wang and @northof66 decided to dive into this story in a visual way, and uncover some of the stories and reasons for what is a small but growing sector for feedlot producers.

Drones… the skies are not always the same since the launching of these flying dervishes, even in the Arctic.

Check out the new CHARTER StoryMap on how drones are changing science in the Arctic, a rapidly evolving technology that is creating new knowledge but also laying down important baseline data for future research.
(They also take stunning images and video - dive in and see for yourself).

Also, read how reindeer herders are using drones, rapidly incorporating this new technology into their daily work.

Authored by @northof66 @jtkerby @northern_ink, featuring 7 cases studies from around the Arctic where drones played a critical role.

Outreach doesn’t have to be digital!

A new CHARTER installation at the @arktikumofficial science museum in #rovaniemi features 12 large scale posters of CHARTER research derived text in English and Finnish with awesome imagery and QR codes for those who love their devices.

As part of the outreach activities of the CHARTER project 13 large scale posters in English and Finnish were created by @northof66 and @irina.v.wang with translation by @jenniikaro

It’s hard to summarize a project as broad in scope and disciplines as CHARTER but we’re proud of the results. They have been installed in the @arktikumofficial in #rovaniemi where they will@remain throughout the busy tourist season.

The posters were hung last week and opened during our last CHARTER assembly. Pictured are @santerihapponen and @jenniikaro during the install.

They will also be hosted digitally in the near future
