Ghost gear + Sea Glass + Recycled silver = Waste reimagined

This one means a lot to us. 🌊
Take a seat, grab a cuppa - it's a long one.

This is our son, sitting on the Northumbrian coast. He is one of the biggest reasons behind why we care so much about what we do. We want him to grow up with these beaches and to explore them, find treasures, watch the wildlife, just as we did and our grandparents.

When we started North Sea Alchemy, we knew our coastline would always be at the heart of it. We spent so much time along the coast, which turned into collecting sea glass. Once rubbish, discarded by people, but then years in the sea transformed it into 'treasure'. But, alongside the glass, we see the other things the tide brings in. Fishing line, rope, nets and plastics. Things that don't become harmless with time and can have a devastating impact on the wildlife. So we collected it and put it in the bin, but that wasn't enough for us.

We wanted to find someone here in the North East, taking the waste we were seeing on our beaches and actually doing something with it, (harder than you imagine).

Then we found fellow alchemists North Sea Rejects 💙

Who recovers ghost fishing gear from our North East coastline, then gives it a polished new life. Transforming it into recycled beads that we're now incredibly proud to use alongside our sea glass. Sharing their story to everyone we meet at one of our stalls.

Our sea glass and their ghost gear both started as things people threw away. Both found their way into our seas. Both were recovered from the coastline we love. And now, neither needs to be on rubbish, on a landfill anymore, they're now treasures.

We're genuinely honoured to be working with North Sea Rejects and to play even a tiny part in supporting the wonderful work they do for our coast, our seas and, most importantly, the wildlife that calls them home.

Thank you North Sea Rejects, not only for helping to protect our coastline, but for being true ambassadors for change 🌊💙

Ps. No tears were shed whilst writing this post. Promise 😭

Rollin’ into the weekend

We often talk about the incredible power of the water, but at the weekend, we harnessed it.

After a few weeks of organisation, this Plunge film screening turned into a huge community event in Seaham. Raising an astonishing amount of money for @beachaccessnortheast - £905 to be exact!

We had speakers, we had stalls and an incredible raffle full of huge items including multiple changing robes, swim ear plugs, original art work from @flotsamprints , jewellery from @northsearejects , swim badges..... it really was incredible.

Katie Wotton (@ocean_calls_swimmer ) was the instigator looking to screen her animated film "plunge" by @land.ellie at @tykefilms . Already, this film has been all over the world winning awards. So it was about time it got shown in Katie's local patch!

What once was a film screening turned into something much bigger, celebrating local community, bringing the community in, volunteering our time and keeping costs low so a price of ticket wasn't out of reach either.

We wanted to raise awareness of access to water, mental health, and how we are all custodians of the water whether we admire it from the shore or whilst in or on it. Incorporating stalls from @surfersagainstsewage (who also did a talk about the work they do and our local waters), @h3obeachsaunas, The Sea we see by @georgina.m.fuller and even @mentalhealthswims !

Lots of mingling, lots of unexpected networking, but most of all to celebrate the incredible Katie and Ellie, and what really is a beautiful film! If you ever get the opportunity to see it, run don't walk ❤️❤️

Did a m#
#acro dive today in the Berwickshire Marine Reserve with members of the Carlisle BSAC club. Probably last one of the year on the east coast of Scotland due to worsening sea conditions for the next few weeks. Water still 11 degrees, not too cold and tons of macro critters to photograph.
