This one means a lot to us. 🌊
Take a seat, grab a cuppa - it's a long one.

This is our son, sitting on the Northumbrian coast. He is one of the biggest reasons behind why we care so much about what we do. We want him to grow up with these beaches and to explore them, find treasures, watch the wildlife, just as we did and our grandparents.

When we started North Sea Alchemy, we knew our coastline would always be at the heart of it. We spent so much time along the coast, which turned into collecting sea glass. Once rubbish, discarded by people, but then years in the sea transformed it into 'treasure'. But, alongside the glass, we see the other things the tide brings in. Fishing line, rope, nets and plastics. Things that don't become harmless with time and can have a devastating impact on the wildlife. So we collected it and put it in the bin, but that wasn't enough for us.

We wanted to find someone here in the North East, taking the waste we were seeing on our beaches and actually doing something with it, (harder than you imagine).

Then we found fellow alchemists North Sea Rejects 💙

Who recovers ghost fishing gear from our North East coastline, then gives it a polished new life. Transforming it into recycled beads that we're now incredibly proud to use alongside our sea glass. Sharing their story to everyone we meet at one of our stalls.

Our sea glass and their ghost gear both started as things people threw away. Both found their way into our seas. Both were recovered from the coastline we love. And now, neither needs to be on rubbish, on a landfill anymore, they're now treasures.

We're genuinely honoured to be working with North Sea Rejects and to play even a tiny part in supporting the wonderful work they do for our coast, our seas and, most importantly, the wildlife that calls them home.

Thank you North Sea Rejects, not only for helping to protect our coastline, but for being true ambassadors for change 🌊💙

Ps. No tears were shed whilst writing this post. Promise 😭

Last week, over a billion plastic nurdles spilled into the river Tyne and entered the North Sea. It is being classed as the biggest plastic pollution disaster in European history.

With each tide, we are seeing these plastic pellets wash up on beaches up and down the north east coast and unfortunately the local authorities’ response has been severely inadequate. But as always people power prevails and it has been down to the community mobilising to help clean up this mess.

In our bio you can find the links to the WhatsApp group which will tell you about local cleans and we’ve also put a website link with FAQs.

Please get out and help clean our beaches! taken in Northumberland Coast by @northsearejects

Jumping on this trend because we’ve been told so many times that individual actions won’t make a difference and that we shouldn’t bother trying. We’re not in our 20s anymore (😩) but we were when we became interested in environmentalism and since then, we’ve met/worked with/and been inspired by so many people making a difference. Big or small, your actions matter and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise 💙

Sand dunes aren’t just piles of sand - they’re powerful natural defences.

They protect our coastlines from storms, provide vital habitats for wildlife, and store carbon that helps fight climate change.

But they’re also fragile. Every shortcut taken across a dune damages the plants that hold it together. Once those roots break, the whole dune can start to collapse.

Next time you’re at the coast, stick to the paths to protect the dunes. taken in Seaton Sluice by @northsearejects

Epic news from @projectbiodiversity that our adopted nest has hatched!

A new generation of endangered loggerhead sea turtles has made their way safely to the sea, franticly swimming against the current before they let themselves drift to the middle of the Atlantic.

Life is full of dangers for baby sea turtles, threats like climate change or coastal development are huge, but the main issue impacting marine life across all oceans is industrial fishing and pollution.

Industrial fishing puts turtles at risk because they often get accidentally caught in nets or on longlines, often drowning as they cannot surface when entangled. They also get caught and perish as well because of ghost nests, which are lost and abandoned fishing gear that fills our ocean and harms not only sea turtles but many other species. Other marine pollution, especially plastic, can be deadly if turtles mistake it for food.

But each of us can make a difference: eating less fish, reducing single-use plastics, and keeping beaches clean. All help give sea turtles a safer ocean to grow up in. taken in Sal, Cape Verde by @northsearejects

The world seems so complicated right now, so much heartbreak, human suffering, environmental damage and climate denialism happening all at once.

It made us smile to receive this email today, the result of a donation we made a while back.

It reminded us of an all time favourite quote, that “unless someone like you, cares a whole awful lot, nothings going to get better. It’s not”.

Stay engaged, stay optimistic, and support those out there doing the work 🌎💙 by @northsearejects
