One of our newest board members, Ariana Parrish, wrote an article that we couldn’t agree with more. 📰

Bringing artists into the construction process isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s about supporting local creatives, activating public space, and strengthening community identity from the ground up.

In Baltimore, construction sites don’t have to be barriers. They can be canvases. This vision aligns closely with our work, where we believe design should be inclusive, community-driven, and reflective of the people who live here.

Read the full piece in Baltimore Fishbowl to see how creative approaches like this can help keep artists in Baltimore and make our neighborhoods more vibrant and connected (link in bio).

congratulations to Nosreme Baltimore and their "ArtWorks in Progress" the grantee for August.

This AWESOME project brings together learning/workforce training, community art, and beautification of Charm City's construction zones.

Look for installations at a worksite near you!

Art is shaping Baltimore before the buildings even rise.

We’re excited to see Bromo artists @wickerhamlomax leading @nosremebaltimore ’s first ArtWorks in Progress (AWIP) residency transforming an active development site at 211 W. 28th Street into a public-facing creative space. This embeds artists directly into the construction process, turning temporary barriers into cultural experiences.

This is proof of concept for how artists, developers, and communities can work together from day one. With support from partners such as @seawall.development , @charmcitybuyers , and @bakerartistportfolios , and collaboration with @build.arch.morgan students, this project demonstrates what’s possible when art is treated as essential infrastructure.

In the Bromo Arts District, we believe art isn’t an add-on. It’s essential infrastructure for a vibrant, connected city.

The Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance @bniajfi helmed by Dr. Amanda Phillips de Lucas, Ph.D., tracks neighborhood change(s), measures many quality of life indicators throughout Baltimore, and helps residents and planners make informed decisions by providing open-access data.

Their annual #baltimoredataday this year started with an amazing panel conversation with John Duda of @redemmas, Ariana Parrish of @nosremebaltimore, Terrance Smith of @baltcityinno, and Justin Williams of BMore Fast which introduced ideas like “who has the right to take a part of the surplus generated by businesses?” and “institutionalizing listening” where listening should come before competencies.

Two weeks have passed, but one soundbite from @robbynlewis46th still lives in my head, rent free.

“Yes, bring your data. But if you want to move us, turn your numbers into stories.”

Hmm…maybe a story like @savingettingstreet?

NDC is kicking off a new board term and a new chapter in our work as a civic intermediary and infrastructure-builder for community-led design across Maryland.

Our new executive committee — Anna Owen Dennis (President), Seema Iyer (Vice President), Ebony Landon (Treasurer), and Francisca Bonilla (Secretary) — brings deep experience in landscape architecture, humanitarian work, strategic leadership, real estate, and architecture to strengthen our regional role.

Nine new board members are also joining us this term, strengthening our role in placemaking and placekeeping with backgrounds in architecture, public art, construction, finance, community engagement, and cultural strategy.

Swipe to meet Ariana Parrish, Alex Aaron, Donzell Robinson, Davin Hong, Andrew Holmes, Terrence Nelson, Mickey Crowe, May Amoyaw, and Louise Griffin — leaders grounded in community ownership, trust, and creative problem-solving.

Designing just futures takes a community of people willing to show up and do the work. We’re glad this is ours. 💪

On May 27th, we had the privilege of gathering our expansive network under one roof for a night 🌃 of connection, impromtu laughs, introductions and intriguing conversation over modern- traditional fused appetizers at the Luna Oaxaca!🌵

Together we:

🎊 Celebrated the recent architecture & urban design trip to the Netherlands 🛫, led by Professor Cristina Murphy (@cri.murphy) of Morgan State University’s School of Architecture + Planning (SA+P)

👨‍🏫 Met students and design professionals who participated in this impactful journey together

🥂 Gave a toast to Derek Moore, a recent masters (M.CRP) graduate who will participate in the 2026 TU Delft Planning and Design- Just City Summer School. Selected from a total of 400 applicants from around the world, Derek will represent Baltimore in the Netherlands once more, following their participation in the student delegation to the Netherlands in 2025.

And

Bid a heart-filled farewell to friends and several Baltimore-Rotterdam committee volunteers who are leaving Baltimore to embark on the next phases of their life🫂

Last week, Business Volunteers helped @t._rowe_price facilitate an incredibly ambitious, pro bono consulting skillCONNECT session! More than 50 volunteers donated their time, valued at $27,500, to 11 local nonprofits in a fast-paced brainstorming session which advised the nonprofits through core business challenges such as board engagement and volunteer recruitment systems. THANK YOU T. Rowe Price for participating in such an inspiring session, and THANK YOU to all the involved nonprofits for being vulnerable and trusting us with your time. If you are interested in participating as a volunteer or nonprofit in one of these skillCONNECT sessions, please reach out, as we have more events planned for 2026!

This fall, Nosreme Baltimore unveiled the Henrietta Lacks Heritage Mural. This wasn't just a 50-foot artwork; it was a reclamation. Co-created with over 200 residents, MSU choir members, and students, we honored Henrietta not as a medical subject, but as a woman, a mother, and a neighbor.

Beyond the paint, this project provided essential value to Baltimore:

✨ Workforce Development: MSU students gained hands-on project management and arts experience.

✨ Economic Integrity: We ensured local artists were paid their worth, validating the arts as a viable career path here.

✨ Civic Pride: We gave 200+ residents a direct hand in beautifying their own neighborhood, fostering a deep sense of ownership. it's seen everyday by thousands .

This project is proof of what is possible. The community is asking for more public art that reflects our shared legacy—and we need your help to keep building.

What comes next? Nosreme Baltimore is building our 2025–2027 fund. If you want to see more murals, more international exchanges, and more investment in Baltimore talent, please consider donating at the link in bio.

I am honored to celebrate the Henrietta Lacks mural dedication in East Baltimore alongside her descendants and the community. Funded in part by the Maryland State Arts Council, I'm proud to oversee funds that create art that educates, inspires, and ensures we never forget our complicated legacies. This project wouldn't be possible with the collaboration of Midtown East community association, Nosreme Baltimore and the talented muralist, Shawn Perkins. #WeChooseBaltimore
