At last week’s Logan Awards Dinner, the @nscdapa honored three outstanding individuals who have made a lasting impact in the Philadelphia region and Pennsylvania: the legacy of Esther Ann McFarland, Councilmember Kendra Brooks, and Karin Wulf, PhD. Proceeds from the Dinner provide critical support for the preservation of Stenton and for History Hunters, the museum’s award-winning educational program for Philadelphia schoolchildren. We’re especially grateful to our Presenting Sponsors, Fiduciary Trust and the George C. and Esther Ann McFarland Foundation. We can never say thank you enough to everyone who joined us at this beautiful celebration to support our work at Stenton. We can’t do it without you! A garden wedding, tucked into the heart of Philadelphia.

Set within the historic National Society of the Colonial Dames, two brides celebrated surrounded by the people closest to them—an intimate gathering layered with history, architecture, and the quiet beauty of a Philadelphia garden.

Elegant, personal, and distinctly Philadelphia.

To celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary, Stenton presents ‘Logania250: Stenton Collections Reassembled’. Placed throughout the house, the ‘Logania250’ exhibition reunites over fifty Logan and related family objects on loan from the City of Philadelphia’s Loudoun collection and the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel, including extraordinary portraits, furnishings, and personal effects that reinforce the palpability of the past at Stenton. Many of these objects have been in storage or out of public view for decades. Stenton is grateful to Theresa Stuhlman and the City of Philadelphia, the staff of the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel, the Wyeth Foundation for American Art, Freeman’s auction house, and the NSCDA/PA’s Wetherill Fund for supporting this exhibition. Now on view.

In honor of the Semiquincentennial and @theclaystudiophl Radical Americana, please join us at Stenton on Friday, May 22nd for a day that combines consideration and examination of historical pewter objects with ‘Sadware’, a contemporary artists’ installation that commemorates pewter as a historically important metal with a longstanding place in American nostalgia culture. ‘Sadware’ asks us what we value, culturally and monetarily and why, and speaks to changes over time, memory, authority, collecting, and discarding.

Pewter – a malleable, silver-colored metal alloy composed of tin, copper, and antimony, or bismuth

Sadware — an obsolete term referring to heavy, flat, or hammered pieces of fine pewter, such as plates.

Space is limited! RSVP at the link in our bio or at www.stenton.org/programs

PROGRAM SCHEDULE:

10:00 AM - Coffee & Refreshments

10:30 AM - Pewter & ‘Sadware’ – Craft, Nostalgia, and Value
Artists Belle-Pilar Fleming and Bri Murphy consider pewter objects as opportunities to examine notions of American identity, inheritance, and consumerism across generations. They will discuss the research and concept behind their embroidery-based installation, now on view at Stenton, as part of the Clay Studio’s 250th Anniversary project Radical Americana.

11:20 AM - Pewter in the Service of Humankind
Curator Don Fennimore will ground our day in the physical properties of pewter, its composition and craft, why it was used, why it fell out of favor over time, and why families like the Logans imported London-made pewter.

12:00 PM - Lunch and ‘Sadware’ viewing

1:00-2:00 PM - Hands-on Pewter Workshop #RadicalAmericana #TheClayStudiophl #Philly250 #VisitPhilly
