Evan Yee completed his bachelor’s degree in combined bioengineering and biochemistry at Northeastern this spring.

Yee was an undergraduate researcher at the Optical Microscopy and Neuro-Imaging Lab (OMNI) at Northeastern. His work centered on a specialized microscope for mesoscopic imaging—a scale of observation that falls between the microscopic and what is visible to the naked eye—used to study the brains of awake, living rodents. Much of his work to date focused on making the microscope fully functional. Together with his colleagues, he used the instrument alongside genetically modified mice with small surgically implanted windows in their skulls to study blood flow and brain activity in real time. Understanding these dynamics in living brains can illuminate what goes wrong in diseased states and point toward potential treatments. Yee received the PEAK Summit Spring 2025 award for his work replacing a segment of the microscope responsible for delivering light to the brain’s surface with an improved lens system.

Since his second year, Yee has been mentored by Assistant Professor of Bioengineering Mohammad Abbas Yaseen, who also serves as his research advisor. Professor Yaseen has been a consistent source of guidance across both research and career questions, and Yee is struck by how reliably he makes time for students despite his many responsibilities. He also singles out Professor Yaseen’s clarity as a teacher and his evident passion for the subject. The relationship has been, in Yee’s view, a defining part of his Northeastern experience.

This fall, Yee moves on to medical school as his immediate next step, with plans to layer in more engineering as his career develops.

Austen Herlihy completed her bachelor’s degree in bioengineering and biochemistry at Northeastern last spring.

In her fourth year, Herlihy joined the Godoy-Carter Microbiology Lab at Northeastern, working on a project studying microorganisms that thrive in extreme environments—deserts, polar regions, and similarly harsh conditions. She was particularly drawn to the vividly pigmented samples in the collection: striking orange, blue, and pink bacteria. She investigated whether that unusual pigmentation might serve as a survival mechanism in such demanding conditions. The project grew substantially, and Herlihy applied for PEAK funding, receiving the Summit Spring 2025 Award for her efforts.

One of the most meaningful experiences of Herlihy’s time at Northeastern was a Dialogue of Civilizations she took in 2024 with Professor Veronica Godoy-Carter, traveling to Chile to collect environmental samples for analysis. Beyond its scientific value, the experience gave her a vivid model of what it looks like to be a woman thriving in STEM. Professor Godoy-Carter is both a rigorous scientist and someone who clearly loves her work—and that warmth and enthusiasm extend to her students.

Herlihy plans to pursue a PhD in gene therapy or genetic engineering, though she is keeping her options open. She is grateful to Northeastern for giving her the space and support to explore her interests across every experience she pursued.

Student Spotlight 🔦

Hannah Carter completed her bachelor’s degree in bioengineering last spring and has rounded it out with a master’s in bioengineering through the PlusOne Program at Northeastern.

Carter entered the research world early, joining the Advanced Biosystems for Neuroengineering Lab (ABNEL) in her first year. At the time, the lab focused on “organ-on-a-chip” systems—small devices embedded with human cells that mimic the functions of organs. She began by shadowing PhD students, learning proper lab technique and getting a feel for the research environment. Once she found her footing, she launched her own project and received the PEAK Ascent Spring 2023 Award for her efforts.

The most important thing Carter has learned at Northeastern is that independence, taken too far, becomes unsustainable. She came in with a strong self-reliant streak and an instinct to figure things out on her own. A few difficult bioengineering courses showed her that using available resources—tutoring, office hours, study groups—doesn’t diminish that independence; it makes it more durable. She now advises students not to be afraid to ask for help, and to invest in relationships with both professors and peers.

Student Spotlight 🔦

Dylan Lasky completed his bachelor’s degree in bioengineering last spring and just earned a master’s in bioengineering through the PlusOne Program at Northeastern, alongside a graduate certificate in engineering leadership through the Gordon Institute of Engineering Leadership.

Lasky’s interest in pursuing a master’s degree was planted early—during his first co-op, a colleague advised him to get the degree before spending years in industry rather than after. Already familiar with the PlusOne Program, he saw it as an efficient path. The decision to add the Gordon certificate came later, when a professor approached him after his Capstone presentation—a project called “Glaucoma-on-a-Chip,” a miniature device that mimics the part of the eye involved in glaucoma to aid in developing better treatments—and encouraged him to apply for the program. He researched it, decided to go for it, and has not looked back.

What drives him is straightforward: he wants to do work that is both engaging and meaningful, and bioengineering delivers on both counts. “The main goal is treating patients,” he says—and that focus keeps the work grounded. He has come to believe that “bioengineering is reshaping the world; we are doing things that no other scientists have done before,” and he wants to be part of that progress. With the technical foundation, leadership training, and professional experience he has built at Northeastern, Lasky is well positioned to be exactly that kind of force in the medical device industry.

Student Spotlight 🔦

James Belanger, E ’25, biochemistry and bioengineering, completed two co-ops—one in a research lab and one in a hospital. With medical school beginning this summer, Belanger hopes to build a career that integrates his passions for both medicine and engineering.

Outside the classroom and the clinic, Belanger explored intramural sports—basketball, kickball, and more—finding both good exercise and a welcoming social community in the process. “I think there is something for everyone,” he says, “and if there is something you want to try, doing it through Northeastern is definitely the way to do it.” He also served as an emergency medical technician for Beauport Ambulance Service, responding to emergency calls and routine patient transfers. The mix of high-stakes moments and everyday care gave him a well-rounded introduction to patient-facing work, and he recommends the experience to anyone considering a career in medicine.

Belanger’s advice to current students is straightforward: try everything. “You’re not going to know what you’re into unless you give it a go,” he says—a principle he has lived by. He never would have discovered his interest in engineering had he not walked into Cornerstone his first semester. He encourages students to resist the “tunnel vision” that can take hold in a rigorous academic environment and to experiment broadly with both coursework and extracurriculars. Exploring your interests, he believes, “is the best thing you can do for yourself” as a student.

Belanger is now an M1 at Brown University's Alpert Medical School. We are incredibly proud of you, and wish you all the best!

In honor of #BrainAwarenessWeek, what if we could predict whether brain surgery will work before it happens?

Francis Loth, professor of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering and Bioengineering, is advancing how we understand Chiari malformation, a condition where disruptions in cerebrospinal fluid flow can cause serious neurological symptoms.

Working alongside Hannah Higgins, a COE Bioengineering PhD student diagnosed with Chiari malformation herself, his lab combines MRI data with computational modeling to measure how brain tissue and spinal fluid move—bringing both lived experience and engineering insight into the research.

The goal: develop a portfolio of diagnostic tools that can better predict which patients will benefit from surgery, improving success rates from ~70% to as high as 90%.

Loth earned the 2026 ASME Savio L-Y. Woo Translational Biomechanics Medal “for unwavering commitment to translating engineering tools—from in-silico and in-vitro analysis of cerebrospinal fluid flow to in-vivo image-based biomechanics of the brain—to decipher the pathophysiology of Chiari malformation and assess and improve its diagnostic and treatment methods.”

Hear the story in 90 seconds.
