However, with the MB&F HM11 Architect Art Deco, it shifts focus to architecture, imagining a watch as the ultimate personal dwelling. The HM11 Architect takes cues from 1960s humanist architecture, a movement that emphasized organic forms and human-centric design in contrast to the stark post-war structures. The watch is conceived as a wearable “house” with four rooms and a central lobby, designed to comfortably rest on the wrist. This architectural influence is strikingly realized in the complex rotating case of the HM11. Comprising four pods surrounding a central core, the watch resembles a miniature house. Each pod serves a specific function, with the central core housing the watch’s essential components. A sapphire crystal dome acts as a roof, while cones form the pod walls, providing lateral windows for viewing. Remarkably, the entire case rotates 360 degrees, allowing wearers to position any indicator in front of them. Even winding the movement is done by rotating the case clockwise, a unique and interactive feature. The watch’s 42mm diameter and ergonomic shape make it surprisingly wearable compared to previous HM models. The timekeeping room, facing the wearer, displays hours and minutes using rod-mounted orbs as hour markers. Adjacent pods house a power reserve indicator and an uncommon mechanical thermometer, adding practical functionality to the avant-garde design. Together with my friend @vertigo1983 we have handled a fair share of their creations before, but this is the first time one truly disappears on the wrist—in a good way. At 38 mm and just 12 mm thick, the SP One feels compact and refined, yet it still delivers that unmistakable MB&F presence. What strikes you first is how light and open everything feels. The pebble-like case, especially in platinum, is incredibly smooth, almost organic, and the way the sapphire crystals blend into it makes the watch feel like a polished stone. On the wrist, the case practically vanishes, leaving the suspended Y-shaped movement to take center stage. And that movement is the real show. Looking straight on, it appears clean and symmetrical, but tilt your wrist slightly and it comes alive. The three-dimensional architecture creates constant visual depth, with the inclined dial at six o’clock remaining surprisingly legible. You find myself repeatedly rotating your wrist just to watch how the light plays across the bridges and open barrel. Despite its avant-garde look, the mechanics are reassuringly traditional—hand-wound, 2.5 Hz balance, and a generous 72-hour power reserve. It’s a thoughtful balance between innovation and watchmaking heritage, something Maximilian Büsser has always excelled at. ❓➡️ 1, 2 or 3 ➡️❓ I first encountered the @atelierwenwatches Inflection in Dubai during Dubai Watch Week, and the moment I picked it up I understood why everyone kept talking about its weight. Tantalum isn’t just visually distinct with its blue-grey sheen—the metal feels almost improbably dense. In the Inflection, that heft comes with a surprising softness, thanks to the rounded silhouette that departs from the sharper Perception line. On the wrist, those curves make the watch sit far more naturally than I expected from a fully tantalum integrated bracelet piece. The detailing stopped me in my tracks. Atelier Wen didn’t take shortcuts: the case and bracelet alternate between brushed and polished surfaces with no flat planes to make life easier. You can sense the struggle behind the machining in the best possible way—every edge feels intentional. The bracelet, in particular, impressed me. It’s an H-link design, but the continuous curvature gives it a fluidity I wasn’t prepared for. And the patent-pending micro-adjust? Absolutely essential on a watch this heavy, and executed cleanly. The dials were another highlight. I saw all three grand feu enamel versions, and each had its own character, but the midnight blue felt almost purpose-built for tantalum. The printed numerals by Lee Yuen-Rapati give the watch a subtly Asian personality without tipping into ornamentation. Turning the watch over revealed the customised GP 03300 movement, with its wind-inspired skeletonised bridges—a thoughtful match to the dial’s design language. Handling the Inflection made it clear that Atelier Wen didn’t just make a tantalum watch—they leaned fully into the material’s challenges and built a product around them. It’s substantial, beautifully finished, and unexpectedly refined where it could have been brutish. If you have the chance, try one on. Jiro Katayama’s Otsuka Lotec brand draws inspiration from objects not typically linked to watchmaking, including classic film cameras, industrial tools, and measuring gauges. Like many of today’s most innovative watchmakers, Mr. Katayama’s design approach seems influenced by what American designer Jeff Barnes described as a “Past/Future” ethos; a retro-futuristic design movement in watchmaking (which he pioneered with Vianney Halter in the original Antiqua, Classic and Trio) that fuses past and futuristic design through the stylistic lens of historical, often Victorian-era, machinery and instruments. IMO, Mr. Katayama’s raw industrial design language differentiates his work from everything that came before. .
