Business ownership is a pathway often filled with obstacles and disruption. Whether natural disasters, market changes, or changes at the government level, Black business owners often navigate tough terrain as we develop innovative and creative ways to keep going and growing.

After the Storm: How Black Businesses Rebuild, Reinvent & Outlast Disruption is a necessary conversation on what it means to be resilient and resourceful when overcoming business disruption.

This week on Return On Impact podcast, our series hosts, Kevan & Ayesha Shelton, sit down with the 2026 Pinnacle Award Finalists: Yolonda Henry of Nuksy's Ventures, Rashid Tillis of Right Time Solutions, and Teeba Rose of The Community Collective; and 2026 Endurance Award finalist Shanquita Simply of Scents Candle.

Four conferences last week, so stay tuned… but first, the best one! 🖤🍽️

Thank you, Chef Chad Cherry AKA @chefkulture, for inviting me to the 2nd annual @stateofblackfood : The Black Wall Street Edition by @iamfarmdout right here in Tulsa.

At check-in, we took a quiz to discover our Chef DNA, and mine is… Storyteller Chef! 📖 Every plate is a chapter, every meal is a novel. As a storyteller, I felt that one. 😄

The cooking demonstrations and tastings… chef’s kiss! 🤌🏽The chefs shared their personal stories, taught new ways to cook, and talked about farming, Black and Brown agriculture, and healthier choices for our communities. Shoutout to #FarmdOut for connecting chefs to farmers! 🌱

The DJ kept the music flowing while a community of people who love farm-to-table food came together, and the chefs served up five-star menus.

I also loved receiving Greenwood Avenue Magazine, Edition 2. @gwd.ave It’s beautifully done, and I love the articles highlighting that “Greenwood Avenue is a seat at the table.”

Then Soul Food Sunday at @circlecinema was simply amazing. We broke bread with new friends and potential partners and shared our stories around the table.

Big love to the chefs who poured into us: @chefchadcherry @darylshularcmc @nuksyscatering @chefdlucks

Next year will be even bigger, so don’t miss it! 🔥

AI Employee meets the catering/restaurant industry.

Chef Yo reached out to ComfortGrowth AI for help automating some of her processes; her hourly staff were killing her payroll budget doing admin tasks. So we audited her business, created her AI Employee (her name is Grace), and connected Grace to her software stack. Now Grace:

1. Logs into an online portal, reads the day’s order PDFs, pulls the matching recipes, creates production sheets, and emails them to the kitchen/operations chefs
2. Reviews cash balances in QuickBooks and sends Chef Yo an analysis every morning
3. Sits in the email inbox, replies to customer inquiries within 5 minutes with the requested menu, and nurtures leads toward booking
4. Drafts invoices in QuickBooks based on submitted orders
5. Feeds order info, checklists, recipes, dates, and more, into the custom operations software we built for Nuksy’s, so the chefs know exactly what to prepare

Nuksy’s has saved serious time and money, reallocating resources toward revenue-driving activities.

If your business is bogged down by non-revenue-producing, time-consuming, or inefficient processes, DM us to schedule a FREE audit. #businessowner #catering #aiemployee #viralpost

What made this year’s forum special wasn’t just the information shared, it was the willingness of people to show up open, engaged, and ready to invest in what’s next for themselves and their businesses.

From conversations on bankability and wealth-building to AI implementation and financial preparedness, the information shared challenged people to think differently and move more intentionally. Attendees gained real insight into what it takes to access capital, build sustainable businesses, and prepare for long-term growth.

More to come next year, mark your calendars for April 2027!
