excited to have been longlisted for this year’s East London Art Prize 💞

thank you to the judges @brendanpcormier @marinetanguyart @mtartagency @alexneedham74 and @m.williams.gamaker for considering my giant communist Beyoncé (Attack of the 50 Foot Comrade), as well as to @bowarts for the prize as a whole (loving the baby pink longlist theme 💅)

from this longlist, only 12 artists will be selected for the final shortlist and exhibition at @nunnerygallery which is an incredibly competitive process. i’ve previously applied to the prize and this is my first time making even the longlist, so it feels like a mini milestone 🩷

congratulations to all other artists included on this list, and a big thanks to everyone involved!

The 4th of October 2026 marked 90 years since the Battle of Cable Street - we're remembering the @eastlondongroup exhibition 'The Working Artist' at the @nunnerygallery, which featured paintings from Albert Turpin: who, as window cleaner, fireman, Mayor of Bethnal Green and leading member of the anti-fascist movement.

Until 20th February 2027, you can visit @towerhamletsarchives latest exhibition to hear the story of when local residents and people from across the East End resisted the planned fascist march.

__

“What a day’ I remember saying to a friend. The press were already out with scare headlines of bloody battles and hospitals, and I went home dead beat, so tired that I did not go to the huge meeting that was held in the Shoreditch Town Hall.

“The following week the Fascist side of the story came out. I was eager to read it but I had not thought they were going to credit me with the whole affair. To advertise their weekly paper ‘Action’ the poster screamed ‘Turpin responsible for East End disturbances.”
Albert Turpin, taken from his memoirs on a chapter about the Battle of Cable Street on Sunday 4 October 1936.

What does a lifetime of making leave behind?

Through paint, print, textiles, sculpture, and installation, Bhajan Hunjan: Speaking Through Materials traces 40 years of artistic exploration. The exhibition reveals how materials can become vessels for memory, identity, and cultural storytelling.

Guided by a unique visual language of line, rhythmic pattern and symbols, @bhajanhunjan’s work pushes the boundaries of meaning as well as materials, often speaking powerfully for women and diaspora communities.

Alongside the exhibition, a new publication offers the most comprehensive reflection on Hunjan's work to date.

A visit to this exhibition is a chance to slow down, look closely, and encounter a body of work that has spent decades in the making.

🗓️ 9th Oct - 20th Dec
🕐 Open: Wed - Sun, 10:00am - 4:00pm
📍 Nunnery Gallery, 181 Bow Road, E3 2SJ
🔗 Free to attend

Couldn’t be prouder of this exhibition or more honoured to curate it. *Bhajan Hunjan: speaking through materials* is now open at @nunnerygallery @bowarts @bhajanhunjan

It’s a great privilege to work with one artist so closely on a project - Bhajan and I worked over the past three years across meetings, studio visits, maternity leave (little Laurie in tow) and so many messages…aiming to demonstrate the immense contribution she has made to art and feminism, showcasing her incredible dexterity in different materials, her true spirit of collaboration and her ongoing quest to articulate our place in the world. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, learnt so many things and seen so many beautiful works.

The show is a true celebration of a very brilliant artist - we can learn much from Bhajan’s works as well her outlook on life.

Don’t miss it or the accompanying publication supported by @paulmelloncentr

Runs until 20 Dec, open late for Frieze Thurs 15 Oct, and I’ll be in conversation with Bhajan on Tues 20 Oct as part of the event programme - see @bowarts website for details
