As well as being your @aston_su Chairperson next year, I'm also a PhD student - and frankly, we're getting shafted. Postgraduate Researchers' pay is astonishingly low (by recent estimates it's below the poverty line) and many PGRs struggle to keep food on the table. The cost of living has skyrocketed this year, but our salaries haven't. We're writing to UK Research & Innovation to demand they increase our stipend in line with inflation. Please, show your support by signing the open letter & sharing the campaign: bit.ly/UKRIStipends Poster for the "PGRs against low pay" campaign. Light blue heading on a dark blue background reads: "We demand". Test below heading reads: "1. An inflation-matched stipend increase. 2. A package of support for self-funded PGRs, migrant PGRs, disabled PGRs". Text below the demands reads: "Say no to reduced PhD Stipends". (The word "no" is capitalised and red). Banner below text reads: "Sign the open letter to UKRI". On the left of the text is the "PGRs against low pay" logo, consisting of the text "PGRs against low pay" on top of a white circle, next to an arrow pointing vertically downwards with a strike through it.

What a great turnout yesterday 8 June 2022 at the @roehamptonstudentprotest! We marched, we sung, we spoke, we dressed up for and made placards against the cuts to the Arts and Humanities proposed at @uni_roehampton. We also wrote letters for the Vice Chancellor, that we personally delivered in the hands of his PA. And it felt strong, passionate - like a real movement. Yes, I was dressed as zombie-Roehampton. The only thing we can do, a colleague suggested one day, is to dig our heads in the ground and scream. This is why the first thing I thought was exactly to do that. To scream against this horror. On my way to the campus, I was listening to Evren Savci @evrensavci talking about the 'hopless activism' of Turkish queer activists. Similarly, I felt hopeless at Roehampton since I joined in 2019, seeing how the fair demands for better working conditions have constantly been dismissed (whilst some in the Senior Management keep six-figure salaries!), and how the teaching staff has been rewarded (with redundancies!) after all the labour they donated during Covid-19. A reminder: Roehampton was the 1st University in the UK to start cutting staff at the apex of the pandemic (this is when I lost half of my department). Whilst many programmes are now being cut, the University is still selling them to prospective students and conducting ‘open days’. And whilst Roehampton has received excellent ranking because of those departments that will soon vanish (see the REF results of Dance and Drama), SM does not seem to take any compromise. As students, we are still waiting for replies to our raised issues. The local MP @fleur_anderson_ has also written a letter opposing the cuts. Despite, and because of, all this, we the students feel like not giving up - so we hopelessly keep on organising until we have the strength to do so. If you haven't yet, please sign the petitions (link in bio too). #roehamptonstudentprotest #RoehamptonUniversity #studentsforroehampton #universityofroehampton #putneynews #savetheuniversity #roessah #roestopthecuts #savethearts #savethehumanities #dramadepartment #performancestudies #UKprotests #Londonprotest #opposethecuts #stopthecuts #toriesout

With the government and media peddling homophobia and transphobia on a daily basis, it is more important than ever to show support to the LGBTQ+ community. I would encourage you to sing the petition and write to your MPs to show Parliament that students support a trans inclusive ban on conversion therapy. Also feel free to come to milk & honey later for a chilled social! #IDAHOBIT #banconversiontherapy
