Still taking in what happened in this room. 🤎

During UNGA week in New York City, we brought a piece of Zanzibar to New York for Sauti ya Mama: The Mother’s Voice.

I had the honor of MCing the afternoon and moderating a powerful conversation, guiding a room of funders, advocates, global health leaders, community builders and storytellers.

And two beautiful things launched in that room.

✨ Zanzibar Magazine, Volume 2!

✨ #MwanzoWake, a campaign focused on the first 1,000 days of life, co-developed by @wajamama_zanzibar and the Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation, and championed by Her Excellency Mama Mariam Mwinyi, First Lady of Zanzibar!

Our incredible panel, Hon. Dr. Zeyana Hamid, Isra Chaker, João Abreu, Esther Wang and Khadija Shariff, reminded us of something simple:

Mothers already have a voice. Our responsibility is to listen, amplify and make sure what we hear moves us to act.

To @wajamama_zanzibar, thank you for trusting @nuumacare to help creatively shape this experience. 🤎

And to @zanzibarmagazine, Zanzibar Maisha Bora Foundation, @everypregnancy, The Beginnings Fund and Segal Family Foundation, thank you for bringing this vision to life.

Thank you to our speakers, panelists, every person who joined us, and @bryantparkgrill for giving these stories such a beautiful home.

Sauti ya Mama. The Mother’s Voice.

From Zanzibar to New York, may her voice travel even further. 🇹🇿🤎

We’re heading into an exciting time, with #UNGA81 in New York happening next week!

This will be WAJAMAMA’s second time attending the UN General Assembly - and this year, our Founder & CEO @nafisa.jiddawi will be hosting a side event: Sauti ya Mama - ‘The Mother’s Voice’ on 22 September.

This will be a luncheon bringing Zanzibar’s mothers, frontline leaders and maternal health solutions to the table and will feature the launch of @zanzibarmagazine ‘s ‘Volume 2 - Blue Economy’ issue.

Sauti ya Mama is hosted by WAJAMAMA and @zanzibarmagazine, in collaboration with @everypregnancy , @maishaborafdn, The Beginnings Fund and @nuumacare .

We’re incredibly grateful to the partners and generous sponsors helping us bring this gathering to life.

The event is by invitation only. To request an invite, please visit the link in our bio.

We’re looking forward to bringing Zanzibar’s voices, progress and possibilities for maternal health into the global conversation!

New York, here we come! 🍎🙌🏽

Stay tuned for what will be spoken about and covered at this wonderful luncheon - as well as a special announcement of a featured guest message - coming this week! 💫

As a survivor of Black Maternal Health disparities- I shared my birth story on stage for the very first time while I was at Martha’s Vineyard for the @nuumacare event and it was honestly such a magical moment of not only release, but also deep healing from the scariest moment of my life✨

Most people don’t know this but I nearly died the day I had my daughter because of pre-eclampsia and HEELP syndrome. It was a traumatic experience but one thing about me is that I am divinely guided, protected and truly no weapon formed against me shall ever ever prosper🙏🏽

Needed was honored to be a part of WORTH: An important event focused on Black Maternal Health & Capital on Martha’s Vineyard.

Needed joined an incredible group of leaders across healthcare, investment, advocacy, and culture to talk about what it really takes to improve outcomes for Black mothers and build systems that support women before, during, and long after pregnancy.

At Needed, we believe maternal nutritional health begins far earlier than and beyond the delivery room, and we were thrilled to bring that perspective into the conversation.

Grateful to @nuumacare and @mckinseyco for convening this important room. ✨
