Once before a high school algebra test, I panicked and wrote the quadratic formula on the leaf of a potted plant beside my desk. I ended up not needing to reference it. The formula was in my brain after all, and everything I needed to solve the problems was there on the paper. But my teacher discovered the cheat-leaf and gave me a zero on the test anyway! I’ll tell you one thing: I’ve known the quadratic formula by heart ever since. But directing THE UNKNOWN VARIABLE brought me back to this test. Not a director by trade (but a ball of anxiety by biology), I’ve been bracing for impact since Nahal first came to me and Momentary with this play 2 years ago. What started as a reading, became a workshop, became a mainstage production when we hadn’t even been sure Momentary existed any more. But every step of the way, we trusted what was on the paper. We answered every problem and moved on to the next one making use of the variables we knew. The team of actors, designers, company, and crew have come together to create something beautiful and complex. It’s math and it’s poetry at the same time (they can’t be unbraided; we know, we tried in rehearsal). The talents, passions, and life experiences from all these artists helped us to ace a test I never thought we could complete! I’m proud of the work we’ve all done together on this play. And most of all I’m proud and in awe of Nahal! The formula for it all (on the leaf, in our minds, and in our hearts throughout). I’m still afraid the teacher’s going to come and flunk us at the eleventh hour, but come see THE UNKNOWN VARIABLE so I can stop stretching this metaphor. 📸 1, 3-5 by @jet.on.set and photo 2 by @taenyunkim 🧮 ✍️ 🪴

Tonight we open THE UNKNOWN VARIABLE, by Nahal Navidar. There are many words to say about this play, the process, what it has meant, and how it has been shaped by every artist pictured here (and more who aren’t). But the words that matter most—and the reason why we’re here today—are Nahal’s script itself. 🏔️🚪 Come see THE UNKNOWN VARIABLE before it closes on February 1. We promise, it will transform you. #unknownvariable #chicagotheatre #newplay #dcase 📸 @jet.on.set

Producing Nahal’s new play The Unknown Variable with Jacob and Momentary Theatre has been the most artistically and emotionally fulfilling process of my life. This incredibly moving, vital, beautiful and empathetic play is on its feet at The Edge Off Broadway and we can’t wait to share it with you. The show runs from January 8 to February 1. Head to thisismomentary.com to get your tickets while you can. Prepare for laughs, cries, and the nectar of sharing in something truly special. The last slide is my transparent attempt to get some of Nima’s art featured on the set. Stage parents gotta start early!

I had the pleasure of meeting playwright and poet Nahal Navidar at the Valdez Theatre Conference in 2015. Then I attended her wedding in upstate NY in 2017. After I moved to Chicago, I got to see a workshop production of this play in 2024. Now it's almost 2026 and I got to shoot some photos before tech week for Momentary Theatre's full production of The Unknown Variable!! From Momentary Theatre's website, "Separated from her bābā in Iran and living in a strange new land, a determined young girl contacts the President, Santa Claus, and God to determine the unknown variable—when her father will be granted a Green Card from the United States so they can be reunited." This play means a lot to me. Not only because I've known Nahal for a decade, but because of its fractured and poetic take on familial separation, the immigrant experience, and how love changes with distance and the passage of time. Please go support this amazing cast and crew! The play runs at The Edge Off-Broadway from Jan 8th to Feb 1st You can learn more or purchase tickets at thisismomentary.com

Today is Yaldā, an Iranian celebration of the winter solstice. To celebrate (and fortify us for our first run off-book), Nahal brought us a bountiful harvest of food and poetry. Tina also pulled a tarot card for each of us (not unlike the Yaldā tradition of finding fortunes in the words of Hafez). We’re having such a good time bringing “The Unknown Variable” to life! We can’t wait to share it with you in a few short weeks (ticket link in bio). 🏔️ 🚪 #unknownvariable #chicagotheatre #newplay #yalda
