✨PA Program Update… featuring Northwestern College!✨

"Class of 2024: The students in the class of 2024 have been in a variety of settings during their second rotation including emergency medicine, behavioral health, orthopedic surgery, dermatology, internal medicine, and family medicine! A handful of the students have taken their second EOR and are off to their third rotation of the semester! We wish them the best of luck as they round out their first semester of clinical rotations in the coming weeks!

Class of 2025: The class of 2025 is nearing the end of the fall semester! We have wrapped up our thorax gross anatomy unit, cardiovascular clinical medicine unit, have learned to cast, splint, and how to gain IO vascular access in patient care skills. Our class participated in dress up days for PA week and had a blast doing so! A few of our students volunteered to give flu shots at several flu shot clinics in the area in early October, as well. They had a great time interacting with the community! Several of our classmates participated in a Show and Tell day with the local kindergarten classes where we demonstrated how to take a blood pressure, allowed them to listen to their hearts with our stethoscopes, and helped them identify bones of the human body using bone models! Others found time to get together to complete a haunted corn maze before Halloween. We are excited to finish classes this week and see our families for Thanksgiving break!"

No one has worked harder than @loganteryn these last 27 months. All of the times I accidentally startled you while you were studying are worth it. You did the damn thing and it’s a bad time to be an illness in Adel Iowa. I can’t even articulate how proud of you I am. Trophy husband Scott loading…

What program and year are you in? Northwestern College Class of 2023

Why did you choose to become a PA? I decided the PA profession was the best for me as I will be committed to positively impacting others by building relationships and providing individual, compassionate care. As I look forward to a career as a PA, it is my goal to use my interest in technological advancements and my strengths as a lifelong learner and problem-solver, to treat and build relationships with patients.

Why did you chose your respective program? NWC program creates patient-centered care that is based in science but also provides unique perspective because of the faith-based aspect. I value that NWC admires human dignity and teaches students to understand this aspect of life and incorporates this into medical curriculum. Building a career from a core of faith and spirituality, to growing and understanding cultural differences along with exposure to scientific advantages, is what drew me to the NWC PA program.

Fun fact? I have never broken a bone in my body but I have had 6 surgeries

HF803 (Harmonization Bill) HAS PASSED THE SENATE! Thank you to all who took time to reach out to your legislators and encourage them to support our bill.

HF803 passed the Senate unanimously (47-0) as amended H-8293. Amendment H-8293 is a technical amendment that updates the year of the Code throughout the bill and makes changes to provisions that were passed by the legislature in 2021. The bill now returns to the House for the House to conform with the Senate amendment. Since it is a bouncing bill, it is eligible for consideration by the House immediately. This means the House can take the bill up and consider it as early as today. As soon as the House conforms in the amendment and passes HF803 as amended, the bill will go down to the Governor for her signature.

Please, reach out to your Senator to thank them for the support of HF803. And then reach out to your Representative to let them know our bill is headed back to them and ask for their support once more.

These updates are especially important for rural PAs and their patients. Forty-five percent of Iowa PAs practice in rural settings, and specifically authorizing PAs to perform these services will increase access to care for rural patients.

Additionally – be sure to mention that this bill is the product of a collaborative effort by the Iowa PA Society, the Iowa Medical Society, and the Iowa Psychiatric Society, among other groups.

Any questions about this bill? Send us a message!

Program: Northwestern College, Year 2

Why did you chose to become a PA?
I chose the PA path as a channel to serve, save, and connect with people. I can appreciate the fragility of the human condition and dignity of the human person. Therefore, this profession provides the opportunity to fulfill myself and others in this capacity through comprehensive, compassionate care and advocating for my patients.

Why did you chose your respective program?
Of the programs I was accepted to, I was most drawn to Northwestern College's mission statement and focus on integrating faith into the care of our patients. Our faculty's attitude, disposition, and actions truly reflect the mission and vision of Northwestern, and they've been sticking to it!

Fun fact: I’ve been in a beer commercial!

Why did you chose to become a PA? Working in the medical field has always been my goal, and when I learned more about the PA profession and what it entails, I knew it was where I wanted to end up.

Why did you chose your respective program? The kind and welcoming faculty, as well as the community as a whole, made Northwestern an easy choice for me.

Fun fact? I grew up working at my family’s large campground, Kamp Dels, and have worked there since I can remember!
