🎼History is made as our album is published as sheet music for students and teachers across the world! 🌍 Join us in our quest to encourage the incorporation of this beautiful music leveled intermediate to early advanced into all teachers’ curriculums, as a significant step towards correcting the marginalization of skilled and essential voices within teaching repertoire. We send heartfelt congratulations to everyone who has worked so hard on this project and a special thank you to our partners for believing in our project: @hal_leonard @parmarecordings @sphinxorg we do not take your support for granted. Now… let’s celebrate 🎉 and grab yourself and your favorite music teacher a copy of this charming and educational book at HalLeonard.com compiled and edited by Dr. Leah Claiborne. IT’S FINALLY HERE!!!!!!!!! 🎉🎊🙌🏾
I can’t begin to explain how excited I am for this new publication, Arise and Shine: Piano Music by Black Composers – 28 Progressive Pieces. 📚✨ This was some heavy lifting, but it all came together so beautifully (and on time😆).
There are so many people to thank, but for now I want to give my deepest gratitude to @hal_leonard for believing in this project and helping it come to fruition. 🙏🏾 Also, to every composer, the estates, and archival libraries who gave a resounding 🙌🏾YES 🙌🏾to bring this collection together. Thank you to the living composers who were so supportive during this process (@kevindaymusic @daveraglandmusic @innocentorum @artinamccain and Valerie Capers)🎶💛
And of course, thank you to @sphinxorg for your continued support and to the artists who have already made this music come to life. (@michelleacann @drkwalwyn @klassicalkyle @mariathompsoncorley @lewis.warren.jr @soundliberator @lizhillpiano @nyahopianist @artinamccain 🖤🎹

This project has taken a journey beyond what I could have ever imagined.
I cannot wait for you all to bring this music into your homes, studios, and concert stages.

The official launch of this new publication will be at the Hal Leonard Showcase in Chicago this weekend at the Music Teachers National Association conference.

My 40th birthday is one for the books! This year so many puzzle pieces snapped into place. In the realm of leadership I am so grateful to be elected President-Elect of Colorado State Music Teachers Association (CSMTA), Secretary for our Recording Academy San Francisco Chapter Board, and to be developing my research project for my doctoral degree at CU-Denver in Leadership for Educational Equity. My piano studio is at its max with incredible students who are learning and performing stronger than ever. I have had the enormous honor to work with Dr. Leah Claiborne as a producer for Arise & Shine: Piano Music by Black Composers for Kids in our quest to bring this music to the masses and encourage the incorporation into all teachers’ curriculums, correcting the historical marginalization of essential voices within teaching repertoire. And finally, my most treasured source of joy, my sweet life with my husband Shawn, my encouraging family, friends, colleagues - I am so lucky. Thank you all for being a reliable support system as I’ve been growing my career, venturing into new spaces of the music industry and exploring pathways that I previously had not even known of. This life is one wild ride! I’m grateful for every second I get. 🎉🥂🎶 Let’s go year 40!

I began this project to honor the contributions of Black composers who have long been left out of the stories we tell about classical music—especially when it comes to music for children. My mission has been to restore and uplift these joyful, imaginative, and beautifully crafted works written for young pianists. This music doesn’t just fill gaps in repertoire—it expands how we teach, how we inspire, and how we define excellence and creativity in early musical education. Arise & Shine: Piano Music by Black Composers for Kids grew into something much bigger than recordings; it is a celebration of cultural richness, childhood curiosity, and the transformative power of representation.
After so much care and dedication went into bringing this project to life, it’s an incredible honor to share that Arise & Shine has been submitted for GRAMMY® consideration for Best Children’s Music Album. This album is more than a collection of performances—it’s a tribute to the brilliance, resilience, and heart of Black composers whose music deserves to be heard and loved by the next generation. Having this work recognized on such a meaningful platform and fellow colleagues in the Recording Academy affirms the importance of telling fuller, truer stories through music—and creating space where every child can see themselves reflected at the piano. Thank you sincerely for your support in this endeavor, and we hope you feel as inspired by the music as our team was bringing this project to life.
