Meet Terence Derrick | Director of Galaxy Swimming | Youth Advocate | Foster Care Reform Voice 💙

Born in Staten Island and raised in the Bronx, Terence has dedicated 12 years to supporting at-risk youth and creating pathways to education, employment, and opportunity.

Having experienced the foster care system himself, Terence transformed adversity into purpose. Today, he advocates for foster care reform, supports young men facing similar challenges, and promotes digital literacy and youth empowerment.

Through Galaxy Swimming, he continues to give back to the community that shaped him, proving that your beginnings do not define your future—your purpose can change someone else’s. 💫

More than 10,000 NYC children are one step closer to free child care.

Yesterday, Mayor Mamdani announced that the City will begin moving more than 10,000 children off the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) waitlist!

This announcement comes on the heels of a $5.2 million investment by Mayor Mamdani to eliminate all out-of-pocket fees for families receiving child care vouchers in New York City!

Thank you to all the amazing advocates and elected officials who made this day possible.

We believe in FREE Child Care For All!

Awareness of community resources, government assistance programs, and local support services are important ways to help individuals and families experiencing hardship. Yet, the more these resources are discussed publicly, the more some people assume that housing, employment, food, and clothing are simply handed to those in need. The reality is far more complex.

A Place Called Home by David Ambroz is a powerful memoir of resilience, survival, and the lasting impact of homelessness, trauma, and mental illness. It sheds light on the barriers that make accessing basic needs incredibly difficult and reminds us how quickly stability can be lost. This book challenges common misconceptions and humanizes the experiences of those navigating systems that are often difficult to access, even when help exists.

A reminder that homelessness is not a personal failure, but often the result of circumstances, trauma, and systemic barriers that many never have to face. And deeply empowering, offering a firsthand look at the strength, perseverance, and resilience required to overcome those barriers and build a life on the other side.

.@NYCDSSCommr was proud to participate in the Connecting Families to Economic Supports (CFES) meeting yesterday at @robinhoodnyc HQ, alongside colleagues from @NYCACS. The convening was part of a multi-year process to expand DSS’s proven benefits access model - NYCBenefits - so that it has greater capacity to serve New York’s vulnerable families, including ACS-involved families. The expansion will empower ACS providers to identify families' needs and connect them to NYCBenefits providers, strengthening economic security for NYC's most vulnerable families.

Through cross-agency collaboration and a shared commitment to supporting families, CFES positions NYCBenefits to help build stronger pathways to stability while working to mitigate entry and re-entry into the child protection system. This partnership reflects the power off bringing public agencies and community partners together around proven solutions that help NYC families thrive. #NYCDSSCares @dmhelenarteaga

I never wanted to go into a classroom and simply tell kids, “Don’t make the mistakes I made.”

Because at 15 or 16 years old, sometimes all you hear are the words.

I wanted them to understand what a decision can actually cost.

So we talked.

About decisions.
About the streets.
About prison.
About consequences that can last much longer than the moment that created them.

Not to scare them.

To give them something I wish I had more of at their age:

PERSPECTIVE.

They may use it.
They may not.

But when that moment comes, at least they have more information to CHOOSE THEMSELVES. 🎯

That’s the work.

OFF THE COUNT. MAKING IT COUNT.
