Join NYC H2O, in collaboration with the CCNY Outdoors Club and the AMC NY-NoJ Outdoors for All Committee, for a special 2-part event on International Coastal Cleanup Day!

Part 1: Plumb Beach Cleanup

📍 Saturday, September 19
⏱️ Meet at 8:30 AM

Plumb Beach is part of the Jamaica Bay area, it provides food and shelter for horseshoe crabs, migrating birds, fish, mussels, and other coastal wildlife.
We’ll spend about 2 hours cleaning approximately 1 mile of sandy shoreline. Every bottle, plastic bag, and piece of trash we remove helps protect this important NYC habitat.

Part 2: Little Odessa Food Crawl

📍 Saturday, September 19
⏱️ Meet at 1:15 PM
($10 - $30, depending on which food you choose!)

We’ll explore a 1-mile area of Brighton Beach, also known as Little Odesa, and stop at several local eateries to sample flavors inspired by Russian, Ukrainian, and other Eastern European cultures.

Registration is required to attend both parts of the event. Please complete the AMC and Eventbrite registrations; links are in bio!

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Excellent article in @gothamist highlighting the incredible restoration work done by @nych2o at Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park. 15,000 cubic feet of invasive phragmites have been removed, allowing for more native wildlife and plants to thrive!

“A 2021 report published by the parks department and Natural Areas Conservancy found that New York City’s remaining 1,100 acres of freshwater wetland play a critical role in reducing the impact of storms,” writes reporter Liam Quigley.

Community spotlight! “A group of restoration workers (@nych2o) have spent the summer wading in the Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park alongside snapping turtles, lizards and fishing spiders as part of a tireless effort to remove 15,000 cubic feet of invasive plants called phragmites.” 💧

🌊♥️ Giving back to our communities, one shoreline at a time!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined the annual GOLD Alumni Beach Cleanup in partnership with NYC H2O at Canarsie Beach. Together, alumni, friends, and community members helped keep our waterfront clean while reconnecting and making a positive impact.

We were also honored to be joined by Council Member Mercedes Narcisse, whose support for community service and environmental stewardship helped make the day even more meaningful.

Thank you to all who volunteered—we're proud to see Johnnies continuing to serve and lead beyond graduation.

I spent this beautiful Saturday afternoon at Canarsie Beach with NYC H2O, RISE, New York Sea Grant, St. John’s University Alumni, and The Flossy Org, filling bags alongside volunteers who gave their time to take care of our shoreline. Thank you to everyone who came out.

I also got to spend some time on the pier saying hello to folks. It was packed. Which brings me to one ask: please do your best to leave our shared spaces cleaner than you found them. That’s just respect, for the water, our parks and for your neighbors.

Our next one is Plumb Beach on September 19 for International Coastal Cleanup Day. Come join us: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/plumb-beach-cleanup-on-international-coastal-cleanup-day-tickets-1997615563926
