Join us for a situated symposium held beneath the 2026 Materials & Applications Summer Installation, 𝐸𝒶𝓇𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝒞𝑜𝓂𝒻𝑜𝓇𝓉𝓈. Borrowing from the discursive and disciplinary format of an academic symposium, the event gathers California-based design practices around a communal table to present research and lead discussion on the entangled topics of material assembly and performance.

Presenting participants include Salmaan Craig @salmaancraig, David Eskenazi @d.esk, Liz Gálvez @office.e.g, Monica Lamela @there_____there, Ben Loescher @adobeisnotsoftware, Paul Mayencourt @berkeley.woodlab, Sophie Pennetier, and Neyran Turan @nyrntrn, with moderation by Kate Yeh Chiu @kateyehchiu and Jia Yi Gu @jiagu. Conversations will begin with a consideration of the research practices surrounding the pavilion itself and expand toward aligned investigations of other materials and interpretations of assembly and performance 🔩🧱💃

We will sit at a large communal table below 𝐸𝒶𝓇𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝒞𝑜𝓂𝒻𝑜𝓇𝓉𝓈 and, in the spirit of experimentally generative and generous gathering and sharing, invite attendees to contribute to a shared potluck of afternoon drinks and snacks!

𝐸𝒶𝓇𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝒞𝑜𝓂𝒻𝑜𝓇𝓉𝓈, designed by Liz Gálvez (Office e.g. / The (Im)material Matters Lab), stages mass and fiber as shared infrastructures against intensifying heat. The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) awarded Associate Professor Neyran Turan the 2025 ACSA Creative Achievement Award. This award honors specific creative achievements in teaching, design, scholarship, research, or service that advance architectural education. It recognizes Turan’s teaching at the Master of Architecture thesis seminar and studio sequence at UC Berkeley from 2017 to 2024, which was themed “Another Imagination—Another Practice.” Turan is currently the director of the Master of Architecture program.

How to imagine being an architect today on a burning planet marching toward climate catastrophe? Instead of resorting to greenwashing, how can we imagine, project, and practice architecture with a sustained sense of optimism? Between 2017 and 2024, Turan taught a thesis seminar and studio sequence at UC Berkeley’s Master of Architecture program, challenging students to explore these questions by radically reimagining architecture as a discipline, field, and practice. Through the concept of restaging, her thesis course sequence has positioned architecture as a potential framework for imagining probable climate futures. Turan says, "As I observe my former students embarking on various trajectories and roles in the field, I hope their thesis projects completed in my courses empower them to continue exploring the specific roles we can play as both citizens and architects in inspiring, reimagining, and rebuilding a world where all people coexist, thrive, and live together with joy.”

Join us for American Disorientation Launch Party TOMORROW, 7 PM!

American Disorientation is a panoramic viewfinder of the American landscape under climatic and political disorientation. If our disorientation is the one thing that remains reliable, then this publication takes the disorienting effects - and affects - of the American landscape as an opportunity for its reconfiguration.

How do we make sense of the ground beneath us when it feels like it’s in free fall? American Disorientation compiles a collective panorama, presenting varied methodologies, strategies, and processes through which the contemporary American landscape is envisioned, engaged, and transformed.

American Disorientation pieces together a collective of views from activists, filmmakers, landscape architects, horticulturalists, curators, and academics from across the Americas, featuring @conquerthesoil @be_right_balcom @degrownyc @dept.__ #marilynmachado #mikegibisser @nyrntrn @oru_mx @tepetl_paisaje @taniushkatt @waithinktank @garciafrankowski .
