Black women selectors in the digital age

Host: DJ Hybrid J (G-Shock Radio, Selectra)

Panellists: Marcia da Vinyl MC (Girlz B Like), Lynda Rosenoir-Patten (Nzinga Soundz), SNDYVIBES (Musenverse) and T-Rock (Selectra)

‘Wheel up and come again selector’ is a phrase rooted in Jamaican sound system culture, community activism and counterculture. A much-coveted title, largely associated with men, being a ‘selector’ is undergoing a renaissance with a significant number of DJs with no links to the culture or scene calling themselves one. Meanwhile, the significant role Black women have played in the selector’s evolution continues to be underplayed.

This exciting panel, which spans two generations, explores the role of Black women DJs as music custodians, pioneers and unheralded selectors, what being a selector means (from curation and mixing to vocal styling and storytelling), and how the role is being reinterpreted in the digital age.

Make sure you get to Education Zone 1 on November 8th at 12-1.30pm

Free tickets in the link in bio.
