🌀 As creative software becomes increasingly automated, how do we build creative skills that stay adaptable, critical, and future-facing? 🌀

Across 13-16 March, we co-produced and delivered Making Weird Work: Art & Technology Jam with the Emerging Media Space and a wonderful team of academics, technicians, students and graduates @uniwestminster.

We brought together students across the Westminster School of Arts to work in interdisciplinary teams and develop experimental prototypes blending different skills and approaches. Using 3D scanning as a starting point, students brought their practices into digital spaces and prototyped artworks with unexpected outcomes, pushing into hybrid directions: 3D modelling, game engines, physical computing and projection mapping.

We enjoyed tapping into different types of aesthetic and technical weirdness across disciplines while exploring emerging technologies and developing new creative methods.

Big thanks to @hellocatfood and @tinapulejkova for generous support to students, and for inspiring talks that opened up rich conversations about hybridity in artistic practice and working with partners across art, tech and science.

Huge thanks to everyone at the University of Westminster who helped make it happen, and to the students for their openness and genuinely weird prototypes! 🎛️🧪🍄‍🟫🫶⚙️🦠🔮📡

Making Weird Work is part of the Emerging Technologies and Advanced Technological Literacies for Creative Disciplines project, led by Liz Allen and @tadejvindis, generously funded by the Quintin Hogg Trust.

Many thanks to Clara Che Wei Peh for organising the 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘮 over the past over the past month, for bringing together members of London’s digital art scene for tailored close-door discussion and for inviting me to do a micro-presentation on 𝘚𝘐𝘋𝘌 𝘘𝘜𝘌𝘚𝘛 as part of the series closing event.

In five minutes or less, I shared a general overview of what 𝘚𝘐𝘋𝘌 𝘘𝘜𝘌𝘚𝘛 aims to do in the coming months and sampled an upcoming 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 article that will explore art institutions recreated through game engines and level designers. Briefly I touched upon five key pieces of this sub-genre:

- Orhan Kipcak and Reini Urban (1995) Ars Doom.
- Palle Torsson and Tobias Bernstrup (1996-1999) Museum Meltdown.
- Lawrence Lek (2015) Unreal Estate (The Royal Academy is Yours).
- Thomas Webb (2020) BETTER OFF ONLINE.
- Green Cube Gallery, Clusterduck, Riccardo Rudi and Superinterneto (2021) THE STRUGGLE IS REAL.

The full feature will include many more examples from this niche.

And it was great to see other presentations from Abigail Miller, Tanya and Oscar of Compiler Zone, Bea of Peckham Digital, Jenn Leung, Shaheer Tarar and Katya Bryskina Ibraz, amongst many others.

Best wishes to Clara for the upcoming Singapore season of the chatroom.

And with that, the Monday Chatroom’s first London chapter has come to a close 💗

We gathered on 16 February (on the eve of the Lunar New Year) to celebrate, inviting back participants from across all past sessions. In a small shift from our usual intimate format, I invited everyone to share about their own practices in optional five-min presentations. It was so inspiring to hear from everyone and all the incredible things you’re working on. I am still reeling in the conversations.

Thank you to @miminguyenmimi for giving the Monday Chatroom a home in Islington, @ninaad.kothawade for supporting another one of my endeavours with your design talents, and everyone who has spent an evening with us, sometimes commuting for over an hour to reach us. It’s been so special to see this network take shape over the past months. I’m certain there will be many more opportunities for us to gather, in London or elsewhere.

The next sessions of Monday Chatroom will be in Singapore and Hong Kong ☀️ some of you have also suggested online gatherings, and if there’s enough interest I’d be happy to start running them too.

Thank you, Monday Chatroom. You’ve made London all the better and cuter 🧚

Black Hole Club Network: Workshop with Oscar Cass-Darweish @o_s_c_d
22nd of Jan 5:30 - 7:30 at BRIG Cafe

Black Hole Club Network returns for 2026 with a series of workshops!

In this first workshop Oscar will introduce his practice and recent work Observe Protocol, a project developed while in residence with Vivid Projects in 2025.

After highlighting ways that the present-day internet and mainstream digital platforms are failing us, he will demonstrate potentials for artistic practice to be useful to help navigate such realities and imagine alternatives.

Focusing on the value of offline networks, single purpose machines, and open-source DIY methods that can be applied in a variety of interdisciplinary projects.
A short practical activity that attendees can use laptops or phones to take part in will take place with an opportunity for reflections from the group.

The @ikonyouthprogramme will also be joining us :)

Join us for Noise Scraper this @digbethfirstfri from 7-9pm for a collaboration between @sawtell.accumulator and @o_s_c_d that explores their shared interests in the creative uses of open source browser-based tools. Taking place across Vivid Projects and @brigcafe through a series of performances, that playfully engage with digital images, their surfaces and intersections. This project reconfigures Hannah Sawtell’s #usefultools_moz app to produce sound from the surface of inputted images, to enable dynamic relationships between image and sound through audience-activated installation and performance.

The work represents the invisible interactions that persistently take place between our digital devices in real time within The Warehouse building at Allison St. Once you enter the space your devices will be interacting with and changing the output of the artwork.

The talk is free to attend and there is no booking required. Following the talk both Vivid Projects and The BRIG Cafe will be open until 8pm.

@o_s_c_d is an artist, creative coder and web developer with an interest in the struggle for autonomy in our daily interactions with hardware, software and code.

Observe Protocol is a work in development by @o_s_c_d hosted onsite at Vivid Projects. Its grid represents the invisible interactions that persistently take place between digital devices in real time within the building at Allison St. Each node visible on-screen represents a nearby digital device, ordered by time of its first detected activity. Variations in colour and appearance reflect how recently it has been active and how strong its signal currently is. Calls and responses are made multiple times a second as local routers, phones and laptops look for new available networks.

Are you present in this visualisation?

If you have at least one WiFi enabled device carried onsite with you, there is every chance you are participating already.

This work does not persistently store any data. Any data presented without requiring your permission is obtained via typical behaviour of consumer Wi-Fi devices and protocols. Any sensor or service you give permission to, via your web browser may send additional data from your device that will temporarily affect the work. This will disappear when the browser session resets automatically every 24 hours, or the maximum number (200) of devices have joined since your device joined.

Prompt cards that are available with the work at Vivid Projects and online via our linktree. Through scanning the QR Code on these cards you can access the website and become a remote viewer to onsite activity.

Vivid Projects is open on Thursdays 12-5pm the work can also be accessed by appointment.
