🌟🔭 STEM UNDER THE STARS WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD! 🪐✨ More than 250 guests joined us for an unforgettable evening of science, discovery, and community at EBIA! We saw Saturn’s rings with our own eyes, explored the universe inside an immersive planetarium, created light using copper, and experienced the magic of STEM through hands-on exploration! STEM Under the Stars is one of our favorite annual EBIA traditions, and nights like this remind us why we love what we do. Seeing students, families, and community members come together to wonder, experiment, and discover is what learning by doing is all about. A HUGE thank you to our incredible Science Olympiad team for helping make this special night possible! Want to come see us in action? Sign up for a tour on our website! Until next year, keep looking up, Phoenixes! #oaklandmiddleschool #oaklandschools #oaklandcharterschools #oaklandschoolenrollment #oaklandfamilies

Oakland families were promised an open, community-centered process to select our district’s next leader. Instead, decisions about the superintendent role were made behind closed doors. Last spring, I sat down with CBS News to talk about why transparency in leadership decisions is non-negotiable for our schools. I was speaking from my perspective as a parent and community member, and also from my past experience running high-profile executive searches to identify leaders that can help Oakland thrive. During maternity leave with my first daughter, I served as Hiring Manager for the Oakland Fund for Public Innovation’s @oaklandfund search for their first Executive Director. If you don’t know the Oakland Fund, you may know about Rooted: Educator Housing, their program that provides discounted rent, reduced security deposits, housing stipends, and financial coaching help educators stay in the profession and build long-term financial security. As hiring manager for the Executive Director role, I managed logistics and processes to ensure diverse stakeholders were heard and felt included as part of this important process. I’d bring that same approach to the search for OUSD’s next superintendent: listening to the community, defining what we need in a leader, and building a transparent process aligned with OUSD’s goals. I’m running for OUSD school board to ensure that the work of the board is done in public, not behind closed doors. If you believe in transparent leadership, we’re glad to have you here. #ousd

🚨 REMINDER: Come paddle with us! Our annual community paddle fundraiser with @paddleseatrek is happening Saturday, October 3, and there’s still time to join us on the Bay. Your $100 registration goes entirely to funding a kayaking experience for one OUSD student, including transportation, gear, program costs, meals, and staffing support! Last year, this community came together to raise more than $5,000, enough to help 50 Oakland students get out on the water. Can you help us meet and beat this goal this year?? 📅 Saturday, October 3, 2026 ⌚ 10 AM - 1 PM: a 2-hour paddle followed by lunch & conversation 📍 SeaTrek’s Alameda location at Ballena Bay 🎟️ Registration starts at $100 Grab your spot and help more Oakland students experience the joy, confidence, and connection that comes from getting out on the Bay. Register now at the link in our bio! #OaklandGoesOutdoors #CommunityPaddle #OnTheWater #OutdoorEquity #OaklandStudents

For this #FlashbackFriday, we’re looking back at a few of our favorite reflections from OUSD students and teachers featured in our 2025-26 Annual Report. Their words capture what @oaklandgoesoutdoors is all about: helping students and educators experience the transformative power of the outdoors, from building confidence and connection to finding moments of joy, belonging, and discovery. 💚 These are the voices behind our impact, and a reminder of why access to meaningful outdoor experiences matters. Thanks to a generous anonymous donor, every dollar you give to Cool Oakland Schools is being matched $1-for-$1 until the end of the month—up to $5,000! When we raise the full amount, we’ll cool 20 classrooms for students and teachers. The best part? We distribute the money quickly, meaning we’ll cool them THIS year. Let’s get this done!!
