⚛️ State researchers are turning nuclear science into a weapon against ovarian cancer. This cancer is often caught late, spreads fast, and resistant to chemo. Now, scientists from @oakridgelab, @utknoxville, and @uthsc have teamed up on an initiative called DART to help. It’s a uniquely TN effort: ORNL has produced medical isotopes for Dave’s and the team’s bigger vision is a “Radiopharmaceutical Corridor.” Learn more on Teknovation.biz🔗

🚀 From intern to COO

While pursuing a degree in communications at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Josh Cunningham didn’t envision a career in STEM.

That changed with a science writing internship at @oakridgelab, administered through ORISE.

As an intern at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, Cunningham translated complex research — on topics like high-performance computing, quantum science and cybersecurity — into clear, engaging stories for the public.

His internship not only helped him hone his skills in science communication, but also gave him a deeper understanding of how ORNL operates and supports big science at scale.

Cunningham went on to join ORNL full time, contributing to scientific support and operational efforts that enable the laboratory’s research.

He now serves as chief operating officer for the Quantum Science Center, headquartered at ORNL, providing operational leadership in support of the center’s research mission and cross-institutional activities.

In this Q&A Spotlight, Cunningham reflects on what the internship has meant for his career — and the lessons that continue to guide his work today.

Big News! 🎉

We are excited to share a first look at our new Continuity Clinic in Knoxville, Tennessee.

This clinic will serve as a place where our future pediatric residents develop lifelong skills, build meaningful relationships with children and their families, and provide compassionate, patient-centered care. From newborn visits to adolescent checkups, our residents will have the privilege of partnering with families through every stage of a child's growth and development.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make this vision a reality. We look forward to welcoming our inaugural pediatric residency class presented by @AxleLogistics to our community and sharing this exciting journey together.

Stay tuned for more updates on the clinic and our residency program!

They said coal was dead.
They were wrong.

A nearly $700 million investment plan is set to strengthen America’s coal industry through new plant development, operational support, and expanded export infrastructure.

This didn’t happen by accident.

For years, American Coal Council CEO, Emily Arthun, has been fighting for the industry, challenging the narrative, elevating coal’s voice, and pushing for policies that recognize the critical role coal plays in America’s energy future.

The momentum is undeniable.

New investment. New opportunities. Stronger communities.

This is what happens when people refuse to give up. While we still face outdated opposition, we continue to move forward, prioritize education, and strengthen the American way of life.

Proud to be American. Proud to be coal.

🚨NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams joined Congressman Chuck Fleischmann at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to break ground on the Advanced Testbed and Operational Learning Laboratory, or ATOLL.

The 21,000-square-foot facility will provide critical capabilities for NNSA nonproliferation programs while enabling advanced research, testing, and technology development across a broad range of enrichment technologies.

Within ATOLL, national laboratory researchers will gain hands-on experience in uranium enrichment, growing a new generation of the expertise America needs to secure energy dominance and remain the global leader in nuclear nonproliferation.

Energy productivity projects can deliver far more value than traditional accounting methods focused only on energy cost savings.

Identifying and quantifying the multiple benefits associated with implementing these projects early on can drive productivity gains, quality improvements, safety benefits, and significant financial gains. By incorporating multiple benefits into decision-making, organizations can avoid underestimating project value, resulting in stronger business cases and more informed investment decisions.

That’s why the National Laboratory of the Rockies and @oakridgelab, with funding from ENERGY, developed JUSTIFI. It’s a free, open-source tool designed to help users quantify the full range of multiple benefits associated with an energy project. For example, users can:

✅ Identify the specific operational benefits tied to a proposed project.

✅ Quantify financial value using a data-driven methodology.

✅ Connect those outcomes to key performance indicators, payback periods, and strategic goals.

✅ Strengthen decision-making and improve project implementation rates.

The platform integrates seamlessly into existing reporting processes—making it easier to present a full business case to leadership.

Where is the hidden value in your next energy project? Find out by exploring JUSTIFI—no training required!

Beyond the Frontier at Oak Ridge 🛰️⚡

From East St. Louis to ORNL with Kentucky State University: Two days immersed in the Manhattan Project’s legacy and global innovation.

1. Meeting the Giant: Frontier 🖥️

The Scale: World’s first true Exascale supercomputer. 128 nodes per cabinet, 8 GPUs per node for massive parallel processing.

The Heat: Water-cooling enters at 80°F and leaves at 140°F.

The Mindset: A "Computational Microscope" using Direct Numerical Simulations and Digital Twins to mimic nature.

2. Stripping Atoms: Neutron Science ⚛️

The Spallation: At the Spallation Neutron Source, hydrogen gas is stripped and accelerated 1,030 laps. The beam hits a mercury target at near light-speed, releasing neutrons to study quantum structures and hydrogen fuel cells.

The Tech: High-power Klystrons and diamond foils drive this atomic breakdown.

3. Printing the Future: MDF & Hybrid Manufacturing 🦾

The Hybrid: Manufacturing Demonstration Facility machines "add" material via hot wiring and "subtract" via milling tools in one workspace.

The Big Print: 7,000 psi structure printed in 30 hours; carbon fiber deep-ocean drones.

AI Qualification: Software detects anomalies in explosive metal powder within a vacuum.

4. The CAVE: Autonomous Reality 🚗

Sensor Fusion: Analyzed Waymo’s 360° camera and radar awareness.

The Language of Speed: Vehicle controls require C++ and Simulink for millisecond decisions; Python is too slow.

5. Engines of Change: Methane & Ammonia ⚓

Converting Methanol and Ammonia into renewable shipping energy. Using high-performance computing to turn CO2 into green methane.

The Takeaway 🎓
Oak Ridge bridges simulation and reality via the Digital Twin. From Zeiss VoluMax precision to Python-scripted robotic arms, the mission is: Be ready before the world needs it.

Thank you KYSU and ORNL. The future is being printed and accelerated. 🚀🔥
