The weather cooperated last night for a fantastic event for @oakvillegalleries at their gorgeous gallery in Gairloch Gardens.

Zac from @walk.ins.only & @kvasfbco served up incredible cocktails for everyone to enjoy.

Thanks to Alix @ourtowno for connecting us and to Haleigh for organizing. I know everyone truly enjoyed the evening and a having chance to meet your new Director, Seamus.

Congrats on your beautiful new book, Sascha! I loved working with you to produce the very striking Gyde, your first editioned series of hand painted bronze sculptures.

Gyde was hand sculpted by the artist Sascha Braunig in wax, and then cast into bronze from a two-part mold. The work measures 7 1/8 x 5 3/8 x 13 3/8, in an edition of 15, produced by Lisa Ivorian-Jones for the New Museum. This edition is sold out.

Referencing the woven meshes, skins, and corsets depicted in Braunig’s paintings, Gyde continues a small, highly coveted series of bronze sculptures that suggest types of armor and costuming. Braunig’s sculptures in bronze are developed from the casual studio models that often serve as the basis for her two-dimensional paintings. Gyde takes the form of a masklike structure, meant to contain, protect, and decorate the face of the wearer, whom the artist sees as a female warrior looking out from within its loosely woven serpentine ropes. In striking contrast with the mask’s hand-applied mint green patina, three spurs, each hand painted by the artist in a radiant coral, protrude from the brow of the sculpture. Though the work is meant to hang on the wall, its potential functionality as a garment remains ever present.

Sascha Braunig’s new book is now available via Triangle Books!

Sascha Braunig
Lay Figure
Published and distributed by Triangle Books
Hardcover, 232 x 287 mm
112 pages, 50 images
Texts by Sarah Iley, Frances Loeffler, Sascha Braunig & Lucy Kim

Co-published with Oakville Galleries
€35,00 EUR + shipping

Lay Figure documents almost forty new and recent works by the Canadian-born, US-based artist Sascha Braunig. Exhibited at Oakville Galleries in 2022, the paintings and drawings in this substantial new body of work use material qualities to analogize an immaterial idea: the feeling of struggling with a system more powerful than you, in which you are also deeply entangled. The book includes an essay by curator Frances Loeffler and the transcript of a conversation between Braunig and artist Lucy Kim.
