Champagne and caviar. Two things you probably wouldn’t expect to find on a mechanical chronograph. This is the Studio Underd0g × Massena LAB 03SERIES “Champagne & Caviar,” a collaboration limited to just 200 pieces worldwide that reportedly sold out in only 12 minutes. The dial is wonderfully clever. The champagne colored surface has a shimmering texture, while the oversized chronograph register at 3 o’clock is designed to resemble a tin of black caviar. And look closely at the central chronograph hand. Its counterweight is shaped like a tiny champagne bottle. Underneath the playful design is a serious mechanical movement: the manually wound Swiss Sellita SW510 M monopusher chronograph, with a 63 hour power reserve. The 38.5mm stainless steel case keeps the proportions nicely balanced. I’ve also replaced the original strap with a colorful custom strap made by OAN.GIO from vintage Japanese kimono fabric, which I think adds even more character. What I particularly enjoy about Studio Underd0g is that the brand understands something many watchmakers seem to forget. Nearly 500 tiny pieces of abalone shell, individually cut and placed by hand to create one extraordinary watch dial. This is my OAN.GIO Raden Hatsuniji “First Rainbow,” from the independent Vietnamese watch brand OAN.GIO. The dial was created in collaboration with Japanese lacquer artist Keisuke Sano, using the centuries old Japanese art of Raden. Approximately 490 individual fragments of iridescent abalone shell are meticulously arranged and embedded in traditional black Urushi lacquer. As the light changes, the dial shifts between blue, green, purple and pink. No two viewing angles look quite the same. Inside is a manually wound Swiss ETA/Unitas 6498 movement, a traditional mechanical calibre with approximately 46 hours of power reserve. The small seconds display at 6 o’clock provides a beautiful contrast to the elaborate mosaic. And there’s another detail I particularly enjoy. The strap is made from vintage Japanese kimono fabric, bringing another traditional Japanese craft into the design. The result is a watch that combines Vietnamese independent watchmaking, Japanese lacquer artistry, traditional textiles and Swiss mechanical engineering. Almost 500 individual pieces of shell. Oan Gio Gotham An oxidized titanium dial. The surface reveals a spectrum of deep blue particles that shimmer subtly depending on the light and viewing angle. Envisioned with a dark, monochromatic aesthetic reminiscent of the mood in the Batman films, which inspired the name of this model: “Gotham.” This is a piece unique imagined in Rose Gold case. 🌟🎉 200th Post 🎉🌟 Oan.Gio Blue Gotham on Ming polymesh The oxidized titanium dial resembles blue-black slate. Tilt it and flecks in the dial’s oxide layer catch the light, revealing iridescent blues with a holographic effect. The Ming polymesh serves as a technologically bold but visually understated companion, showcasing rather than stealing the show.
