May 2026: Students enter the Sculpture Building at 246 Edgewood with varied levels of experience. We meet them where they are and push them to reach for more. These students in particular held tightly to what they learned and continued to challenge themselves by seeking out opportunities in their chosen fields outside of the classroom walls! What a gift is to witness students come into their own! We are beyond proud of everything you all have accomplished. This is just the beginning! Think with your hands and stay in touch!

The graduating BFA Sculpture students!

Both Kaleb and Trevion were in Emily’s first Intro to Sculpture class at GSU, Fall 2022!

Skyler graduated with a BFA in Textiles and worked as a research assistant with Emily working on connecting various forms of nylon.

A guide to live by! Zora’s on the way!

They understood the assignment: The vessel is an objet loaded with metaphorical and symbolic values just waiting for you to embed your own narrative. Students must also determine what to place inside your creation, contemplating how the imagery on the outside can be in communication with the interior substance. Use this transparent medium to create something as another method of reaching out, exploring the plasticity of the medium both visually and conceptually. Unpack what a vessel means to you now, what has it meant historically and throughout time. What does your vessel hold physically and what does it hold metaphorically. What do you think?!

As prepared as our team was, the most impactful lessons were learned on that pour floor. Our community grew even bigger that day as @massartironcorps both hyped us up (even making a sign and cheering for GSU!) and allowed us to join their furnace to fill up our molds. Thank you fam! This is why we do it.

In August, I visited Metal Plate Galvanizing in Birmingham, AL to get some work dipped. It was so cool to see! I brought some students along to get a behind-the-scenes look.

This acorn was cast when the Sculpture Building was moving from it’s former location to it’s current. A ladle of hot iron was carried 5 blocks and the acorn mold was cast at 246. The planting of a seed occurred that day. Last year we cast half of an oak tree with the intent of having those on the pour floor sign it. This year, we did the same, but this time we included more students and our alumni on the tree! It’s wonderful seeing how our @foundry_tree has grown. Huge thank you goes to Gabriel Akagawa for traveling to our pour to add to Georgia State’s legacy. Check it out! We’re a hot bunch! Link is in our bio!
