🧶Meet @ou_sova’s Ally Scherer, an innovative artist whose work draws on nature, spirituality, catharsis, and a willingness to explore the unknown, all while engaging with the world with kindness, curiosity, and grit.

@obnoxiouslyresilient is an interdisciplinary student who rediscovered the arts after leaving the Navy due to injury; during her service, she worked in a nursing capacity as a corpsman and has a background in health sciences and communications. Questioning her next steps in finding a newfound purpose, she forged a new path devoted to the arts.

⏳Ally’s work is an amalgamation of the primordial, contemporary, and entrancing subversions of sculptural art (alongside several other disciplines). Throughout various pieces, the artist uses naturally dyed wool (explaining how this venture began with a residency that led to exploration, trial and error, and finding her groove). Her work and perspective are shaped by her accessibility advocacy, with designs planned around her identities, the deconstruction of shame and other societal stigmas, and a desire to provoke others to consider how their work supports/alienates a myriad of lived experiences.

Ally’s approach also draws from her home life, where she and her family actively determine the balance and boundaries between personal and communal spaces. She shares that teaching her children to share communal space or take independent time prepares them to have greater empathy, respect, and symbiosis with our world. This exchange shows up in Ally’s interactions with peers and community members, and it underpins her art practice. She also speaks about movement and where energy is dispersed (meditation, making a cup of coffee, art research, sketches) in her daily life as motivations for her practice.

🫶Furthermore, Ally discusses how integral it is to have someone championing your work, whether that’s peers, friends, (found) family, or yourself. The artist also enjoys creative acts like cooking, making dishes in honor of her Grandfather’s Persian heritage, baking and cutting sourdough (she has a book on the subject), and spending quality time with her pets, Kitty Chesney, Tango, and Cinderella.

Installation Part Three. 📀📀📀

Back in Oxford installing at the University of Mississippi Museum!

What began as individual sections is continuing to grow into an immersive environment, with lines, curves, and reflections connecting the galleries.

Each visit brings new challenges, new connections, and a better understanding of how the sculpture occupies this special space.

October is going to be a great month! My curated show Palette Swap opens at @artsat302 this Friday, October 2nd! The reception is from 6-9 and will include some light refreshments. I have an incredible group of artists participating so I hope you’ll be able to join us. You’ll notice some of your favorite Oklahoma artists on the roster, but I’ve also recruited masterpieces from artists in: Iowa, Kansas, Tennessee, and New York! Many of these artists have created entirely new artworks for the occasion so you’ll be the first to see these naturally dyed treasures!

Install Day Two. 💿

Sunday in Oxford, and the pieces are beginning to find one another.

Day Two was about connecting the individual sections as the lines and curves start working together within the architecture of the University Museum.

There is still a long way to go, but I love this stage, when the installation begins to shift from a collection of parts into a space you can move around, beneath, and eventually through.

So grateful again for the incredible hands, patience, problem-solving, and teamwork making all of this possible.

And so it begins…
Friday I drove to Oxford, and Saturday, Sept 5, we got to work with the 1st installation day at the University Museum.

After months of planning, making, packing, and preparing, there is something pretty magical about watching these pieces begin to leave the floor and find their place in the architecture.

So grateful for all of the hands, problem-solving, 💿 tying, lifting, adjusting, and support making this possible.

Special thanks to @obnoxiouslyresilient and @therealactualgarfield for their studio assistance this summer, to UM curator @munns_antonelli and the entire museum team and volunteers, to rockstar onsite assistant and new Ole Miss sculpture grad student @michellevo.art , and to Durant Thompson for his support, problem-solving, and for being there through so many stages of bringing this installation to life.

Starting off the fall term by making your mark on Sculpture!

Intermediate & Advanced Sculpture students kicked off the semester with a quick opening project: each student designed and fabricated a letter for a new OU SCULPTURE sign above the main entrance to our shops.

Different materials, processes, personalities, and approaches, all coming together as one collaborative sign welcoming everyone into the Sculpture area.

And it’s officially up!

It was a year ago I started at University of Oklahoma! Woooo!!! 🎉 This year's been a wild ride, but I feel very supported and happy being here. I'm also really happy Crystal came with me for this chapter of our lives. Yes, I am still making art, it's just shifted a bit as I re-align.

1. Dressed up as grad student Cierra for our Cleanup Day. I'm proud of the cleaning job the students did and watching them create and learn is amazing.
2. Screen capture from @oetagallery's mini doc on my colleague Prof @lbajuyo. We are steambending wood for Antonio's art banjo.
3. Our weekly staff meetings have been very special.
4. I made these cool wreaths for our house.
5. It's our first live tree. Thanks Ally!
6. Our cat, Ermine, watches over the Core 2 class chiseling plaster.
7. Crystal needed to blow off some steam, so we had a date night with a sledgehammer and cast iron bathtub. Slowmo style.
8. Using the CNC plasma to re-do the ladle for casting iron.

10. A Birmingham art gallery during SLOSS conference with OU students. It was at the conference that it hit me, damn this is what I should be doing.

Planting hope one seed at a time. 🪴 This week, I tucked onions, red hot peppers, cilantro, thyme, marjoram, and lemon balm into the earth—despite my garden not being wheelchair accessible (yet) and my body throwing its usual curveballs. I don’t know if I’ll get to fully enjoy the season, but I do know that dirt therapy is worth the effort.
