🐾💔 PUPPIES: WHY WE RESCUE THEM. Did you know that some of the most vulnerable animals in Los Angeles County shelters are PUPPIES? Most people assume puppies are adopted immediately. They’re tiny, adorable, innocent. Who wouldn’t want one? But the heartbreaking truth is that many never get that chance. Just like human babies, puppies are born with developing immune systems. Their first routine vaccinations generally begin between 6–8 weeks, followed by boosters until at least 16 weeks. But many puppies enter shelters before they’re even six weeks old. Some are actually born there. And shelters can be dangerous environments for puppies who aren’t fully protected. Parvovirus and distemper can be deadly, and even puppies who have received their first vaccination remain vulnerable. Diarrhea. Vomiting. Runny eyes. Nasal discharge. Fever. In overcrowded shelters with limited medical resources, puppies showing signs of serious illness may face euthanasia. Imagine entering this world only to leave it before ever experiencing the warmth of a family, the joy of running through the grass, or the safety of sleeping in someone’s arms. 💔 THIS IS WHY WE RESCUE. At Concerned Citizens Animal Rescue, saving a puppy is only the beginning. Vaccinations. Deworming. Veterinary care. Proper nutrition. Quarantine. Sleepless nights. Meet Annie! 🐾💕 A Sweet Little Survivor Looking for Her Forever Home! Annie is a beautiful, affectionate young kitty, estimated to be around one year old or younger, with so much love to give! We found Annie outside an abandoned home in the High Desert, where she had been left behind with nothing but food and water. In an area where coyotes and other predators pose a constant danger to stray animals, Annie’s situation was especially heartbreaking. Annie has been declawed. 💔 This means she was left outdoors without one of her most important natural defenses. Thankfully, we found her before anything terrible happened. Despite everything, Annie is an absolute sweetheart! She is incredibly loving, gentle, cuddly, and happiest curled up in someone’s lap. She’s a true lap cat who just wants to feel safe, loved, and close to her humans. Annie has a wonderful appetite, healthy litter box habits, and is receiving her veterinary care, including vaccinations and microchipping. We will also arrange for her spay surgery if needed. Annie must be an indoor-only cat because she has been declawed. We’re looking for a loving family who will cherish her and give her the safe, permanent home she deserves. That’s right! The more adoptions we make, the more space we have to bring babies in from foster homes and get them ready for adoption. After 9 long months of rehabilitation from their heartbreaking past — tied up in chains, abandoned, neglected, and battling disease — this gorgeous duo is finally healthy, happy, and starting to live La Dulce Vida life! 🎉🐾 NONA HAS BEEN RESCUED! SHE IS SAFE! ❤️ Nona #A5798504, the 5-year-old Belgian Malinois mix facing euthanasia at Downey Animal Shelter, has officially been SAVED! For five years, Nona lived in a backyard. When her owners surrendered her, they couldn’t even get her pronouns right, repeatedly referring to this beautiful girl as “he.” Despite everything, Nona is gentle, submissive, loving, playful, and incredibly sweet! She LOVES playing catch and is already learning to walk beautifully on a leash. ❤️ Sadly, most of her bottom front teeth are severely worn down, which can happen when neglected dogs resort to chewing on rocks, fence wire, or other hard objects out of hunger, stress, or desperation. But Nona’s past will NOT define her future! 💔🌈 **REST IN PEACE, SWEET SCAR. WE TRIED.** 🐾 It is with absolutely shattered hearts that we share the news we prayed we would never have to deliver. **Our precious little Scar didn't make it.** 💔 Just two months old. A tiny, innocent baby who had already endured more suffering than any living creature ever should. Severely malnourished, neglected, abandoned, and fighting parvo, Scar never stood a fair chance. By the time help came, his little body had already endured so much. He didn't receive the care and treatment he so desperately needed when he needed it most. And that is what makes this loss so incredibly heartbreaking. We wanted so badly to give him the life he deserved. A warm bed. A full belly. A loving home. A chance to be a puppy. A chance to simply **LIVE.** Instead, we are left with broken hearts and the unbearable knowledge that his little life ended before it ever truly began. **To everyone who donated, shared, prayed, and believed in Scar, thank you.** From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for caring about a little life that mattered so very much. We also want to respectfully address the donations made toward Scar's care. We understand that you donated specifically to help save him, and we want to honor that trust. **If you would prefer to have your donation returned, please reach out to us privately. Today, I named him Onyx. 🖤 He was just a puppy. A little boy, probably 3 or 4 months old, whose life had barely begun. I found him deceased on the side of a desert road this morning. Rescue is incredibly hard here in the High Desert. There are constantly stray dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens wandering through the fields and along the roadsides. The morning drive to my children’s school is often the hardest part of my day. Almost every morning, I see at least one domesticated animal who has fallen victim to the speeding cars that race through our desert roads at night. Sometimes they’re still alive, and I do everything I can to save them. Other times, there’s nothing left to save. When I find an animal who has passed away, I stop. I pray. I give them a name because I believe every living creature deserves to have one. I tell them that they mattered. That their life meant something. That they were worthy of love, even if the world never showed them that. I ask God to keep them safe until we meet again on the other side, where they’ll be healthy, playful, and loved forever. Then I cover them with a blanket. I buy them at Walmart for $3.95. I always try to choose the pretty ones. It’s such a small gesture, but somehow it feels important. I call Animal Control to retrieve their bodies, and sometimes I move them from the roadway myself. I know I don’t have to do any of this. Their lives have already ended. There is no rescue left to perform. But to me, rescue isn’t just about saving lives. It’s about making animals feel valued, loved, and dignified. And that includes the ones who don’t make it. Today, that was Onyx. I don’t know where he came from, whether anyone ever held him, or if anyone ever told him he was a good boy. But today, someone stopped. Someone gave him a name. Someone prayed over him and made sure he wasn’t forgotten. Rest peacefully, sweet Onyx. 🖤 You mattered. And you always will.
