For HOMEBREW SUMMER, San Diego’s foremost wet-hop beer brewer, Tom Nickel, is sharing a recipe for a Nickel Beer Co. double IPA of that ilk as a tribute to his late father, who was a big fan of that annual fresh-hop creation. Click the link in our bio (www.sandiegobeer.news) to learn about Tom’s dearly beloved dad and download the recipe for Green Truck.

When you go to your favorite brewery or watering hole this weekend, don’t forget to use a coaster! Bartenders don’t like those pesky beer rings on their bar. Hint: you should go to @sandiegobrewing this weekend. Hit me up if you need custom coasters and cheers to the weekend!

Two guys from the indie music scene, a warehouse, and a gut feeling that beer wasn’t as great or weird as it should be. Thirty years after Stone Brewing tapped its first keg, we called up the guys who started it all—Greg Koch and Steve Wagner—and asked for all the stories.

Stone’s early days weren’t just about two founders taking a risk. They were about the people willing to roll the dice on them, too.

Independent restaurant owners put an unknown local beer on tap. Brewers shared knowledge instead of protecting it. Stone was given a chance when there wasn’t exactly a line of people waiting for the next craft beer.

Greg remembers sending postcards to hundreds of restaurants and getting just three or four people interested enough to follow through. Steve remembers that their earliest customers tended to be entrepreneurs—other people who could hear “we’re two guys trying to start a brewery” and say, “yeah, let’s give it a shot.”

This fall, Stone celebrates 30 years. Names, faces, beers, and brewers have all evolved since 1996. But Steve and Greg’s legacy hasn’t: take the risk, make something you believe in, and always extend a hand to others who are doing the same.

This is A Stone’s Throw, our series celebrating @stonebrewing and the people, places, and ideas that helped get this massive boulder rolling. Stay tuned for more.

One of my favorite holidays with my bestie girl 🌟

All the beach days on both coasts 🌊

The drinks on the east coast 🤤🍸🍷🧋

It's been far too long since I've been back home 🪄

I could photograph the ocean forever 🌊

It's been a month of fits for sure 🤭

Beers with the Congresswoman at the No. 1 beer bar in America 🍺🇺🇸

Round two with Congresswoman @repsarajacobs — and this time we picked the spot that outranked every other beer bar in the country. @obrienspubsd on Convoy has been voted the top beer bar in the USA three years running, and it sits right in her district. 🍻

A little context on why this place keeps winning: O’Brien’s opened in 1994, back when San Diego’s craft scene was barely a scene at all. Twenty-eight rotating taps, a real devotion to Belgian and European styles, hoppy pours that earned it the hoppiest-place-on-Earth nickname, and rarities you won’t find on another tap list in the county. The kitchen holds its own too — wings with a cult following, burgers, tortas, house-made soups. A strip-mall pub operating at a level most white-tablecloth rooms don’t. 🍗🍔

Jacobs represents the largest military community in the country, and her recent Armed Services Committee exchange with the Secretary of Defense went wide online. Her read on it: he treats these conflicts like a video game, but the people getting shipped out are her constituents — and they deserve better leadership.

What surprised us was what came next. The fights get the clicks, but a lot of the committee’s actual work is bipartisan and rarely breaks through — military housing, childcare for military families, IVF access. Quiet work, real stakes.

Great beer, real conversation, one strip mall on Convoy. Peak San Diego. 🌴
