A life saved in the nick of time.
When 10-week-old Gesso (formerly Coco) arrived at Española Humane, he wasn’t just an adorable pup looking for love — he was fighting for his life.

Thanks to the sharp eye of Dr. Kristen Jensen, he was quickly diagnosed with intussusception — a rare and often fatal condition where part of the intestine slides into another, causing a severe blockage. Most puppies don’t survive it. But this time, things were different.

Dr. Jensen’s timely diagnosis gave Dr. Chandra Lilly and our skilled surgical team just enough time to perform an emergency intestinal resection — a complex, high-risk surgery. It was touch-and-go, but Gesso pulled through, showing the world just how tough and resilient one tiny pup can be.

Today, Gesso is thriving in his forever home. His adopter, Ash Steele of @obtaincreative, shared:

“The most unexpected little guy made his way into our lives this week. We went to Española Humane to meet another pup, but she’d already been adopted. Then we saw Gesso — a pup we’d seen online weeks ago and thought was already gone. Turns out, he’d been through major surgery for an intestinal blockage right after arriving. He’s doing great now and we’re amazed by how resilient and smart he is. He’s already giving our other pup a run for her money. Welcome to the fam, Gesso boy!”

Because of your support — and our incredible veterinary team — Gesso got the second chance he deserved.

Miracles happen here. You help make them possible.
And this month, your impact goes even further: All donations in May are being matched, dollar for dollar, to help us save more lives like Gesso’s.

Special thanks to Horizons Sustainable Financial Services for supporting this lifesaving work. Learn more at HorizonsSFS.com or call 505.982.9661.

Our journey has been marked by growth, collaboration, and a shared commitment to impact. Here's a glimpse of our evolution:
.
🌱 Laying the Groundwork (2015-2016): Supported by @santafe_cf and the @kelloggfoundation , a taskforce was formed supported by Avivar Capital to outline options for place-based collaboration in New Mexico. A NMIIC pilot is launched with 12 member organizations gathered under a membership-based model.
.
🚀 Creating On-Ramps (2016-2018): NMIIC enters an 18-month pilot phase and is able to deploy over $6 million across 11 investments via shared due diligence and information facilitation. A second pilot phase is launched in May 2019 and facilitated by The Democracy Collaborative to further explore impact investing collaboration strategies.
.
🌎 Reorganization & Scaling Impact (2019 and Beyond): NMIIC retains Avivar as its impact investment advisor and transitions operations to NMAG for a brief period. Stabilized under Santa Fe Community Foundation as a fiscal sponsorship, NMIIC establishes formal governance and policies and procedures for impacting investing. NMIIC begins to recruit new members and grow its impact investments pipeline to include broader impact areas and geographies within New Mexico.
.
Today, we continue to transform capital flows, we've onboarded our first NMIIC fellow and marketing firm @obtaincreative and hosted our first in-person summit! We're on a mission to make New Mexico a better place for all, and our evolution is a testament to our dedication to that vision. 💪🏡💚
