Underwater videographer, educator and founder of Oceans Below, Elisabeth Lauwerys was featured inside GOSS Magazine Issue 91 | Aquatic.

Based in Koh Tao, Elisabeth has built a life beneath the surface — teaching underwater filmmaking, documenting marine life and using storytelling to inspire greater protection of our oceans.

Today Meribel and I finished our Advanced Nitrox & Decompression Procedures training with Naomi. 🔱

But finishing the course doesn’t suddenly make you a technical diver.

If anything, it shows you how much work comes next.

Now comes the practice. Running the plans. Repeating the skills. Refining the procedures and developing that three-tier awareness — self, team and global.

Not simply looking at what’s happening around you, but actually seeing it, processing it and acknowledging the smallest details.

Naomi has been an unbelievable instructor and mentor throughout this course. She put us through our paces, challenged us, humbled us and absolutely did not make it easy.

And that’s exactly why we chose her. ❤️

There comes a point in dive training where choosing the cheapest option simply shouldn’t be the priority.

When you start moving into technical diving, invest in proper training. Choose the right instructor. Choose the right dive centre. Choose an environment designed for the type of diving you want to do.

For us, coming to Dauin Tech Divers was one of the best training decisions we’ve made. The entire team operates like a well-oiled machine, and being surrounded by that level of experience and professionalism makes a huge difference.

We leave this course with a certification, yes—but much more importantly, with a massive amount to practise, refine and build upon.

That’s how it should be.

New country. New dive centre. New challenge. 🇵🇭🤿

Meribel and I arrived in Dauin today and our first stop was Dauin Tech Divers to visit our friend and soon-to-be instructor, Naomi Allen.

And what a first impression.

The technical diving setup is seriously impressive — a dedicated tech centre with individual equipment stations, training facilities and support for everything from sidemount and open-circuit technical diving through to CCR, DPVs and mixed-gas diving.

But facilities are only part of the story.

What really stood out was the people. From the moment we arrived, the entire team made us feel incredibly welcome.

And then there’s Naomi. 🔱

I’ve known her as a friend, but on Monday Meribel and I get to experience another side of her when we become her students for our Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures training.

Naomi has spent more than a decade developing herself across technical diving, wrecks, caves and mines, as well as participating in exploration projects in Thailand. Her own teaching philosophy centres around precision, preparation, awareness and strong foundational skills — values that resonate massively with the way I believe diving should be taught.

That’s what makes me particularly excited about this course.

I’m an Instructor Trainer, but I’m still a student.

There’s always another skill to refine, another perspective to understand and another instructor you can learn from.

And when you meet an educator whose experience and approach you respect, sometimes the best thing you can do is shut up, listen and become the student again.

On Monday, Naomi takes over. 😎

Advanced Nitrox + Decompression Procedures begins.

Meribel and I genuinely cannot wait to see what she has in store for us.

The first time I descended below the surface, everything went quiet 💙

For someone who had spent two decades running from herself, fleeing into alcohol and drugs that is not just pleasant. It is medicine.

The first photograph I ever took underwater was of a lion fish on a small island called Gili Gede.

One murky, imperfect, completely extraordinary photograph of a lionfish in bad visibility off a wooden shack in Lombok.

And I knew …

This. This is something I will do for the rest of my life.

I want to celebrate the following women who inspire me more than anything else.

And they remind me why I photograph this world in the first place:

Because you protect what you love.

And you can’t love what you’ve never seen.

Most people will live their entire lives looking at the ocean from the surface, seeing blue water, feeling the pull of something vast and beautiful, but never knowing what lives below 🐌 🪸 🐡

The creatures, the magic, the whimsy ✨

That’s why I want show you the ocean you never knew existed, so you’ll love it too.

And maybe, eventually, fight for it.

The ocean saved me. I’m spending the rest of my life returning the favour. 🌊
