Proud to be part of the team designing the new National First Nations College (NFNC) at The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) with @greenawayarchitects @warrenmahoney @oculusstudios @ttwengineers

The National First Nations College will be built on Gadigal land at Harris Street, Ultimo. The building will embody architectural and design excellence and promote caring for Country – the complex interconnectedness between Indigenous people, the natural environment and the spiritual world.

As well as being home to students, the building will showcase contemporary Indigenous art, film, performance and storytelling, and strongly acknowledge Traditional Custodians and local communities.

06 Lea Taylor, Djeran

Lea Taylor is a Wadandi, Menang, Goreng Bibbulmun yorga who’s family connections are to the Hill and Maher/Williams families.

Lea’s art influence came from her mother, starting at a young age, seeing her mother paint, write, sew and play music. As a child Lea loved to watch her mother create but did not have the confidence to make her own art. She dabbled in a variety of art practices over the years, never really finding her true fit. It wasn’t until she reached her 50s that Lea revisited art as a way to calm her mind and heal. She started painting but soon discovered that her true passion and talent lay elsewhere. When she started coiling (weaving) and making Booka (kangaroo skin cloaks) her art practice bloomed.

As a self-taught weaver and artist Lea explores technique and style using traditional and contemporary materials and found objects such as bones, quills and feathers. This gives her work a unique edge, showing the beauty in what is generally discarded. Lea strongly believes that her ancestors guide her to create in a culturally respectful way.

The Six Seasons Bidi project has given Lea the opportunity to explore a new way of sharing her rich culture to a bigger audience. Her piece, ‘Connection’ refers to Djeran (April/ May), when the first rains come and the winds change, enabling the ancient practice of cultural burning.

This in turn would lead to the regeneration of seeds, which would grow to be the foods that nourished Bibbulmun people, the trees from which tools would be made, and the shelters to protect families from the cold rains of Makuru.

Lea’s sculpture represents the season of Djeran, which aligns with the months of April - May.

05 David Jones, Bunuru

I am an indigenous artist with connections to the Wiilman, Kaniyang, and Goreng Noongar Nations and connections to the Kimberley through my Bunuba bloodlines and the Warburton ranges through my Wangkathaa bloodlines.

I’m predominantly a painter. I tell my journey and that of the Noongar people’s survival through art. I share pride, emotions, healing and spirituality through my paintings.

I have done a few canvas paintings which were sold to friends and family and through art exhibitions. Currently one of my artworks is installed at the police training centre in Midland. Another artwork was sold to a Japanese delegate and is now in Tokyo.

After hearing from the speakers at the Subi East artist briefing session, I wanted to be a part of the project. I thought it would be a great experience to work with the Whadjuk Elders, and everyone involved in this project to represent the story of the six seasons and how each season represents a new beginning. Being able explain our Noongar seasons through artwork is, I think, the beginning of cultural change in the way seasons are interpreted.

I’m currently employed as a dogman/rigger. I started as a labourer. My experience in the construction industry has given me an understanding of the stages that go into making a project happen.

It has also shown me that hard work and dedication builds opportunities and confidence, and I am now drawing on this experience to further my art career, starting with this project.

I want to give a shout out to the fellow artists on their amazing sculptures, the mentors and everybody involved to make this all come together. I’ve really enjoyed the process and look forward to creating more artwork.

David’s sculpture represents the season of Bunuru, which aligns with the months of February - March.

04 Rubeun Yorkshire, Birak

Rubeun Yorkshire is a Noongar, Yamatji and Wangktha man. A visual artist, dancer, stage combat choreographer, and actor, Rubeun is well known for his performance as Banquo in the award-winning production of Hecate – a re-imagining of Shakespeare’s Macbeth in the endangered Noongar language of south-western Australia.

Since graduating from the Western Australian Academy
of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2010, Rubeun has been practicing and exploring his cultural connections through performance and visual arts and sharing his knowledge with community and Noongar youth through his mentoring role at Balga high school.

Rubeun has assisted his grandfather Warren Yorkshire on public art commissions and painted several murals around the state using aerosol.

He has completed a range of public artworks for corporate, major festivals and education institutions including a 40 metre mural at Port Hedland High School in collaboration with local Kariyarra/Pilbara artists.

Rubeun’s public art ethos is to consult with local community and create work that is site specific.

Much of Rubeun’s public artwork has been done in collaboration with long time friend and mentor Matthew McVeigh. As a public art team they have been short-listed for and been awarded many public art projects.

Rubeun says “I continue to work on a range of projects that require me to liaise with my Elders and am excited by extending this process for this project. I really enjoyed assisting uncle Toogar Morrison using a new medium, mosaic and seeing him work with community.”

“Public art is something I have recently become very interested in as an experienced storyteller working across mediums.”

Rubeun’s sculpture represents the season of Birak, which aligns with the months of December - January.

03. Jarni McGuire, Kambarang

Jarni was born and raised in Noongar country; a Whadjuk, Ballardong and Yuat woman living in Boorloo (Perth).

Jarni says “My inspiration is found in my culture, using my language and listening to my Elders by hearing their stories, asking questions and following Noongar protocols.

I believe a lot can be learned from many art forms, and I love sharing my culture my way. Each project is done with proper consultation to ensure the work I produce is authentic and is something my mob and community can be proud of. I love to bring our traditional stories and art into the modern landscape.

While most of the work I produce is on a digital platform, I love working with acrylics on canvas and exploring new art forms.

As an emerging artist, I am particularly interested in this project as I believe our six seasons are significant to the Noongar community; directing our movement, what we ate, and how we lived. As a whole, it captures many aspects of our culture and especially our connection to Boodja.

One thing I am extremely conscious of is ensuring that how I work is culturally appropriate and that what I deliver through my expression of art, is something that my community can be proud of. So, being led by Elders and learning from them throughout the project is so important for
me in this project, as it continues our practice of passing down knowledge and it creates a safe space for me to learn.

I am committed to my community, especially my Noongar community. I love amplifying and expressing my culture in my way and am keen to continue representation of Noongar culture throughout the community.”

Jarni’s sculpture represents the season of Kambarang, which aligns with the months of October - November.

Our nationally award-winning project 'Delivering Best Practice Urban Design Through Planning' investigates and untangles the many convoluted, layered and variable design regulations that exist within the ACT planning system and recommends a simple and robust design governance framework that is tailored to the ACT context, and which will support good design.

We couldn't have done this without an informed and open-minded client in the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate in the ACT Government, and our brilliant collaborators @andy_fergus, @adamsurban_au, @oculusstudios and Creative Environment Enterprises.

#throwbackthursday to one of our unique GardNet projects.
.
Completed earlier this year, the Lubber Run Community Center replaces a community center originally constructed in the 1950s in Arlington, VA. Lubber Run, designed by VMDO Architects and OCULUS brings a net-zero energy facility with over 60,000 square feet of public park space over structure kept watertight by MM6125 with landscape powered by the Garden Roof Assembly to the local community.
.
Of note in the landscape design are the steep sloped lawns secured by GardNet adding vertical interest and dimension. Kudos go to the construction team for bringing the design vision to life: MCN Build, Prospect Waterproofing Company, Denison Landscaping Inc.
