Have you ever heard the story about the scorpion and the frog? Well, it goes like this:

The scorpion asks the frog for a ride to the other side of the river because it cannot swim. The frog hesitates and refuses at first, worried that the scorpion will sting it. To reassure the frog, the scorpion argues that it would be illogical because the scorpion cannot swim and therefore would drown. Convinced the frog allows the scorpion to climb onto its back, and they start swimming across. However, in the middle of the river, the scorpion stings the frog. As they both perish, the frog asks the scorpion “Why?”. And the scorpion replies, “I can’t help it. It’s who I am. It’s in my nature.”

Inspired by Glenn Adamson’s article called “Craft and the Allegorical Impulse”.
