Are you ready for week 1 of the Triana Blanket CAL?

The Triana CAL starts today, with Carmen @off_the_hook_creative ‘s Sirio tile.

Sirio is an eight-pointed star, named after Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. Her free video tutorial takes you through it round by round, and the written pattern is on Ravelry.

Carmen @off_the_hook_creative and I first connected online over a shared love of tapestry crochet motifs, then we discovered we actually live quite nearby. Since then, we’ve been meeting up to crochet together for the last couple of years.

When we decided to design something together, we thought of several project ideas but kept coming back to motifs. We considered several concepts but none of them quite felt right until we came up with the idea of a patchwork of different squares inspired by ceramic tiles. That idea became the Triana Blanket, and each of us designed two of the squares.

We chatted about all of this over a cup of tea the other week, and the full conversation is now on both our YouTube channels. You’ll find the links in our bios, along with the CAL page containing all the details about how to join in and make your own Triana Blanket.

Each tile in the Triana Blanket has a little story behind its name.

Carmen (@off_the_hook_creative ) and I each designed two tiles, one geometric and one botanical, all inspired by Mediterranean tilework, and we decided to give them each their own name.

Here they are in the order they’ll be released in the CAL:

Sirio is Carmen’s eight-pointed star, named after Sirius (Sirio in Spanish). Sirio is the brightest star in the night sky, and Carmen's favourite.

Roseta is my floral tile, a large flower with four main petals. Roseta means a small rose or rosette, so it felt like the natural name.

Oliva is Carmen’s botanical tile. Its leafy sprigs made us both think of olive branches.

Nova is my geometric tile, and the design came before the name. A nova is a sudden flare of light from a star, and the way the diamonds radiate from the centre reminded me of this.

The blanket itself is named after Triana, the historic tile-making quarter of Seville.

The Triana Blanket CAL starts on Friday 23 October, and here's how to get ready.

1. Choose your colours and get your yarn. Carmen @off_the_hook_creative and I both used Swish DK from @wecrochetofficial : 9 balls of the main colour, 10 contrast and 3 for framing and joining the tiles. You can copy one of our colourways or choose your own. If you're using another DK yarn, the amounts are on my CAL page.

2. Sign up to my email list to get links to each week's pattern and tutorial straight to your inbox.

3. Join the Catherine Crochets Facebook group to share your colours and progress, and meet others taking part.

Last week, Carmen and I sat down on my sofa with both our blankets to talk through the Triana CAL.

The Triana Blanket is a collaboration between Carmen of @off_the_hook_creative and me: 20 tapestry crochet tiles in four designs, all inspired by Mediterranean tilework. We each designed one geometric and one botanical tile, and made the blanket in our own colours, blue on white for me and copper on white for Carmen, using @wecrochetofficial ‘s gorgeous Swish DK yarn.

Fun fact: when my daughter was little, I found the cutest pair of bright orange and pink dungarees in a charity shop. My MIL told me that orange and pink didn't go together 😬 🧡💕🧡

Our opinions may have clashed (😉) but, as I didn't have a problem with orange and pink together, I continued dressing my baby in the dungarees for as long as they fitted - and she wasn't even a pink baby iykwim 🤭💕🧡💕

As you can see from my neon endeavours, I really like orange and pink together - stand up for what you believe in 💕🧡💕
