Taking Up Space 🫧✨

This past weekend was perfect! Walking through Downtown Boston, taking in public art by women of color, talking about what we saw, and ending the day hitting a lil two step on the @rosekennedygreenway

Big love to the Boston Public Art Triennial ( @thetriennial ) for collaborating with us! Stops on the tour:

🎨 Unbound — Harmonia Rosales (@honeiee)
🎨 Feel + Flow — Sabrina Dorsainvil (@oh_sabeedee)
🎨 The Midnight Ride — Rixy (@rixyxir)
🎨 Big Hoops to Fill — Ja’Hari Ortega (@ja_hari713)

Our amazing tour guide @emerson.holloway + @nattie.n for led us through the city and gave us more reasons to look up. 💕

We ended the walk at Big Hoops to Fill with the @greenwaypublicart + @sidepresents , celebrating Ja’Hari and her work with, music, joy, and a whole lot of love, coloring, games, and bubbles! 🫧💓✨ (& the line dancing got us some extra steps for the day! 🤭)

And last but definitely not least, thanks to our friends at Nixie (@drinknixie) kept the Art Girls refreshed all day long with the yummiest sparkling water + sodas. 🥤🍓💕✨

Art City Nashua was a solid three-block festival filled with murals, music, new friends and old. The transformation along the Nashua River Rail Trail is truly dramatic! The locals in the neighborhood were beyond excited for the much-needed makeover.
For the second consecutive year, Q, @quest.nine, created such a fun, welcoming environment where artists could simply be artists. Her energy, vision, and efforts were once again amazing, and it was a pleasure to be part of it.

Ang kapangyarihan ng kahinahunan • The power of gentleness 🐓🫶🏼🌞

What an honor to paint another portrait of myself, my mom, and grandmother. Three generations of women embracing one another holding a rooster, a symbol for the fighting spirit of life. One lesson my mother and grandmother taught me was the ways gentleness is the key to holding onto that fighting spirit. Anger and aggression are what drive it away. And when you need it most, a gentle heart will bring that fight back to you.

This one day of painting was a whirlwind. It was inspiring to paint alongside so many talented artists and see the amazing art come to life as the day went on. And even though I may have been a little hard on myself when it came to parts of my mural - in the end I got to stand beneath two people in my life who (although are no longer here on Earth with me) have guided me through so much of life. Their wisdom and joy and gentleness and fight are within me now. And this was a beautiful way to honor that.

Thank you @artcityhq for the space to create and to my fellow artists for keeping the energy high all day and night. Yall amazed and inspired the hell out of me. Much love to you all 🫶🏼🧡🌞

Huge thank you to @artcityhq for adding me last minute and to @petecosmos for painting with me. My daughter Penny helped paint all the flora across the bottom of the mural cuz I'm too old to do that much crouching 😂

It had been far too long without a Pete Collab in my life. The mural was his concept, for the most part. And I had a blast! Thanks to @kobrapaintusa
For the awesome paint!

The sky was very gray on Friday.

We still gathered, boarded the commuter rail together and made our way to the water for our "community / adult field trip".

This was the second "community field trip" that I organized this week.

On Sunday some of the same people boarded a ferry with me and we spent time on Spectacle Island, with the support of @savetheharbor .

For some, this trip was a day of firsts.

Their first time at this beach. Their first time on the commuter rail. And this is part of the intention behind "Wellness For Us" (a limb of Yoga For Us). This was created to provide more opportunities for us to gather, rest, talk and have experiences together as people of color, with our specific needs in mind.

Bringing people of color towards the water has been on my heart and mind for a couple of years now.

The ocean has been a home for my joy, my healing and a place where I've gathered with family and friends since I was a child. I'd been going on my own adventures via "Free Friday's" all summer and I wanted to welcome others to develop a relationship with the ocean or reengage their own.

Our people have always been in relationship with the sea. Across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and other diasporic cultures, salt water is medicinal, healing and cleansing, and that knowing gets passed down whether or not we remember it consciously.

On Friday we let the day be what it was in terms of weather. In yoga, this is called Santosha, contentment. Not needing the moment to be anything other than what it is. Some folks painted or drew pictures. Some journaled. Some took walks, or stood by the water. Others napped.

We passed flowers around. We shared food and stories. We blew bubbles into the wind. We jumped waves. A few people wondered off alone and drifted back when they were ready.

I carried no attachment to how any of it should look, or go, which is another practice of its own - Aparigraha, the art of not grasping or being attached. I only hoped to gather us and welcome each person to take what they needed. From what I observed, that took place.

NOTE: there is still one more "Free Friday" on the @mbta_cr 🫶🏾
