We both forgot our wedding anniversary despite me tattooing on it us both after the last time we forgot.

Margate Pride is just one of those days that makes me so unbelievably proud (teehee) to be queer and grateful to have found myself living here 🧡

It always has to be said: pride isn’t just a party, it’s a protest, because every single part of our community deserves to exist, live without fear, be exactly who they are and love whomstever they damn well wish, and Margate loves to be loud about it!

This year the importance of having somewhere to feel safe ✨seen✨ and apart of something felt especially close to home with the closure of our beloved @campmargate , our local community queer bar that I and so many, hold so dear to our hearts 💔

Losing it will leave a hole in Margate that no “limited edition pride collection” can disguise. So we celebrated, but we mourned too. For every niche night it gave us, every friendship group it started, every queer person who walked through its bifold doors spotting the giant disco ball (and full accessibility) and felt the sweet relief of home and belonging like i did. Because man is it gonna be missed. Becauae no matter how greedy landlords get, supporting the community is protecting our spaces, because regional queer spaces save lives!!!

‘A Type of Knife’
my sculpture shown as part of ‘First Milk’, our inaugural show at The Romantic.
Open every day except Tuesdays until the 9th August. 12-6pm

A portrait of the artist aged sixteen, covered in the high-heeled spikes that made her feel big. Made of stuffed tights, she recalls the great women artists, in this case the dolly is filled with other people’s shit. Actual filth - domestic and hospo-industrial waste - filled hoover bags, tumble drier lint, spent toilet roll tubes, bent wire hangers and rags.

On her skin are vintage bandages and dressings hoarded for sixteen years. A collection that was held, shamefully, until finding this use: illustrating a practice of self-care facilitated by self-harm which became a refuge.

As an artist, I work primarily with drawing, printmaking and the written word, with the collection of ephemera and keeping of a diary being a driving force. Through this practice of documentation I aim to shed light on the boring or hidden: hidden labour, disability, feelings, or worlds. Finding meaning in the mundane, the erotic thrill in drudgery.

Making this sculpture has been transformative, having a larger space than I have had before has enabled me to unbox all of the things I’ve collected over the years. To sit with my memories, make a mess and create something imperfect and with feeling. I see this work as a gateway to a more expansive practice and greater understanding of myself.

A week ago today we celebrated my bestie and one of my favourite pink humans @ohhello.amanda turning 40 with a medieval princess party (in the middle of a heatwave) and I’m still smiling about it!

I know everyone says it, but it’s true what they say about getting older being a literal privilege. Especially when you get to do it alongside friends who make even the most ordinary Tuesday feel like a silly seaside fairy tale. I couldn’t have done the last few years without you Pops 😭✨

So here’s to a happy 40th year to Princess Amanda. Thank you for giving us another excuse to dress up ridiculously and make memories we’ll still be laughing about when we’re 80.
