Growing up in Brooklyn as a Haitian kid, this weekend meant one thing. Eastern Parkway. West Indian Day Parade. Flag out, no explanation needed. 🇭🇹

But even that pride came with grief. My parents raised me on stories of Haiti, the first free Black republic, and I grew up dreaming of going, only to always hear “it’s too dangerous right now.” That’s been true my whole life. And now the danger isn’t just over there. It’s here too. TPS being stripped away, ankle monitors, deportations, hatred for our people out in the open.

So this year I did something different. I didn’t just show up for Parkway. I went all in on my culture everywhere I could. Notting Hill. Konpa London. Paris. Pre-CreoleFest here in NYC. Because this grief has been with me since I was a kid, but so has this pride. This year, I chose to let the pride be louder.

🇭🇹Check on your Haitian friends. Stand with us. 🇭🇹

🩷Community!
To everyone who had a hand in making my birth-month kickoff celebration a reality, THANK YOU!

I’m so grateful for old and new friends, family, and for those who couldn’t make it but sent love from afar.

There’s still time to celebrate! 🎉 Stay tuned.
