There are two arguments I often hear against converting turf grass to native plants. 1. That turf grass areas are needed for kids to play, dogs to run, etc. 2. That native plants look “messy” or aren’t as beautiful as manicured spaces. But, there are a lot of spaces across our communities where turf grass is the default, but doesn’t fulfill a functional or beautification purpose. Rights of way between sidewalks and streets are great examples. Rarely are those spaces used for play or recreation, and native plants serve a beautification purpose (as well as mitigating stormwater runoff and so many other benefits). OKC Beautiful is bringing 200 free trees to the Eastside, and they’re looking for residents, businesses, and organizations in the project area to participate. 📍 Eligible properties must be located between NE 23rd & NE 4th and I-35 & I-235. 🌱 Available trees: • Tulip Tree • Sawtooth Oak • Bald Cypress Trees will be planted by trained volunteers on October 3, weather permitting. OKC Beautiful will also help coordinate utility locates and work with property owners to identify the best planting locations. The deadline to request a tree is September 21!
