Some people inspire you with their accomplishments. Others touch your heart in ways you’ll never forget.

I had the privilege of meeting Oksana Masters, one of the world's most decorated Paralympic champions, at Peak Vista Community Health Centers’ Breakfast of Champions in Colorado Springs.

Born in Ukraine, Oksana faced unimaginable challenges growing up in orphanages before being adopted. Despite significant physical disabilities and the loss of both legs, she went on to become a world-class athlete across FOUR Paralympic sports, earning 24 medals!

Her story of resilience, perseverance, and finding purpose is remarkable.

But for me, the most powerful moment wasn’t on stage. ❤️

I had the opportunity to meet Oksana at a VIP event and again the following morning, when something truly special happened.

My daughter who was adopted around the same age, had a private conversation with Oksana that will stay with her forever.

They connected over experiences few people can fully understand—the challenges of growing up in orphanages and group homes, overcoming difficult beginnings, and finding strength, identity, and purpose along the way.

Watching two women, each with her own unique journey, connect through shared experiences was incredibly moving.

For my daughter, that conversation was transformational.

It reminded me that our beginnings do not define our futures, and sometimes the greatest gift we can give someone is the reassurance that they are seen, understood, and capable of extraordinary things.

And how fitting that this happened at an event supporting dedicated to removing barriers to health care and creating opportunities for individuals and families throughout the Pikes Peak region.

I’m grateful for @peakvistachc commitment to our community, for @oksanamasters extraordinary generosity, and for a moment my daughter and I will treasure forever.

💙 Sometimes the greatest champions aren’t defined by the medals they win, but by the lives they touch.

Thank you to @dirkhobbs and Colorado Media Group for being a sponsor at this event.

The people who care for our community deserve care, too. 💙

At this year's Breakfast of Champions®, we came together to recognize something important: our community is stronger when more people can get the health care they need.

We were honored to welcome 8-time Paralympian Oksana Masters as our 2026 Athlete Champion. Oksana shared her inspiring journey, the importance of having access to health care, and the vital role community health centers play in helping people get the care they need.

From the people who serve our meals to those who care for our families, every person plays an important role in making our communities stronger.

At Peak Vista, we're working to remove barriers to medical, dental, and behavioral health care so more of our neighbors have the chance to stay healthy.

Thank you to Oksana and everyone who joined us, supported our mission, and helped make this year's event possible.

When Peak Vista works, our community works.

Congratulations to our 2026 #WSFAnnualSalute Wilma Rudolph Courage Award honoree, Oksana Masters!

The most decorated U.S. Winter Paralympian of all time, eight-time Paralympian @oksanamasters has amassed 24 medals, including 13 golds, across four sports. Born in Ukraine with radiation-induced birth defects and later undergoing the amputation of both legs above the knee, Oksana has spent a lifetime refusing to let circumstance determine what she could become. When injuries forced her to change course, she adapted, reinvented herself, and found new ways to compete at the highest level. In 2026, she made history once again, adding four gold medals and a bronze to her remarkable record. Through every setback, comeback and reinvention, Oksana has found a way forward, inspiring others to see possibility where the world too often sees limits.

This. 🙌 As the only nationally distributed public radio sports program, I was thrilled David Greene invited @oksanamasters on the show to talk about adaptive sports, and most importantly, what do we still need to learn. Thank you @brittkahn for the intro and always thinking of Oksana and Paralympians 💞

Oksana Masters is a 24x paralympic medalist and four sport athlete. From when she started her Olympic journey in 2012 to now, the conversation around Paralympic athletes has changed for the better, but she says it’s still not enough.

@oksanamasters tells David Greene about some of the disparities that still exist between Olympians and Paralympians and what the media often overlooks when covering them.

THIS IS what women in sport look like...

Strength isn't one big moment, it's what these women do every single day, long before anyone is watching.
